    Technology and card counting detection

Does the technology exist that can tell casino personnel, say pit, the count at any given table at any time? If it does, it probably makes card counter detection far easier.

There is one casino I play in where the pit guy seems to head to a monitor when he sees anyone wong in with a bet greater than $50 on a $10 minimum table or bets bigger money and otherwise plays minimum. The same casino (and its siblings in the chain) have a pit person often spending time at the monitor on the HL room. Its quite obvious when there is only 1-3 tables in play and someone is winning.

You could say they are watching porn or checking emails but this is quite constant in one casino chain much more so than in others.

Such technology could be devastating and short sessions would have to be even shorter.

Do they have the computer / touch-pad thing at the tables where they slide your players card to rate a player? The casinos that don't have that at the table, oftentimes rate players at the computer on the podium in the middle of the pit.

There’s one casino I’ve played at where all of the betting is done electronically (you don’t use real chips). Imagine sitting at a table and there’s an iPad type screen built into the felt in front of your seat. You feed money into a machine and the balance is uploaded to your screen.

On this game, while the betting is done electronically, the game is dealt by a live dealer using a real shoe. The difference is that there’s a card reader built into the shoe, so your screen knows whether or not you won/lost your hand before the dealer can even deliver your card. The cool thing about this technology is there’s virtually no chance of experiencing any kind of mistake that will go in the favor of the house, as the shoe scanner totals up your hand for you. The bad news is you’ll never be able to capitalize on dealer errors either.

Anyway, assuming the casino is using a shoe like that, I do believe the casino could program their system to keep an accurate count to compare the betting patterns of their patrons in relation to the the count. But otherwise, I’d say they’re probably not tracking the count. The shoe at the casino I’m referencing is pretty big and bulky. Almost looks like a hybrid between a shoe and a CSM. As the card exists the shoe, a scanner at the bottom reads the card.

Ryemo - wasn't that what Mindplay did and it was banned?

If I'm not mistaken, with Mindplay they were originally shuffling up on +EV counts. Again, if I'm not mistaken, I think I remember reading that they were forced to change it so they can only see the count or EV of the current shoe with 12 rounds of delay. Don't quote me on that, but I just remember reading something like that (maybe it was something else altogether, or that poster or article wasn't correct).

I think I've played on one of those tables that Ryemo is talking about, although this would've been a long time ago when I played it. I have no idea what kind of technology it was or who made it.

Yes. Although, I’m not sure if MindPlay was banned or if it simply failed. MindPlay had a lot of issues that lead to it’s demise, not to mention it was extremely expensive.

MindPlay experienced a lot of technical difficulties with camera calibration and random malfunctioning. Here’s the funny thing too: the one time I did play at the casino I referenced in my last post, there was an error when one of the cards came out of the shoe. The pit boss had to mess with the shoe for a couple minutes to recalibrate the system. I imagine small malfunctioning like that occurs often.

While the technology is out there, experiencing constant technical difficulties with this type of stuff is probably inevitable. It would just be better to have a knowledgeable casino personnel on staff.

I believe that the Mindplay issue was using a computer to analyze and act on games in real time, whether it was shuffling the cards or acting against players. The resolution was a time delay. When Mindplay couldn't be used as a cheating device anymore its appeal waned and it failed. It was expensive and players avoided it.

And a lot cheaper. Cost isn't just the cost to use the system.

I think it was Aa Rogers that filed a complaint with Gaming about Mindplay, and eventually got it pulled.

IIRC, the late John Allen (a long-time Green Chipper) sued casinos with BobN. He lived in LA and said he wouldn't mind being so outed because there was an astronomical number of John Allens in LA!

Is this the person who had the handle "adhoc"? If so I met him at a green chip party and sat next to him at the dinner along with Bootlegger. I tried to talk him into taking early retirement. He didn't listen and just a few years later he was dead.

Correlation is not equal to causation but your implication is quite clear.

Yep. Adhoc should've listened to you!
