For me, Playing rated early has been of tremendous value. I made a whole lot of mistakes in my first couple of years, cementing my reputation as a ploppy. It has resulted, even today, with free room offers plus good credit and, in some places, table play coupons of $100 each month.
After getting nasty feedback from pros on this site, I tried playing unrated on trips to Las Vegas and MS only to realize that heat increased significantly while playing anonymously. I played DD games relatively heat free when using my players card. Now, On trips, I play unrated but if heat is intense, I just use my card.
A local casino took counter measures and then put me on OSN. For a while, I thought my playing days locally were over and I might face difficulties on my trips. To my surprise, the other two local casinos still let me play unaware of my being in the database as an AP. OSN did not have any effect in Las Vegas or MS either.
Now, please don't take this as advice. If you play different stakes (I play $10-$15 minimum 6 deck and $15-$25 DD games with a max bet under $175), Playing to pay bills (full time aaP), use big spreads, and such, listen to the pros. For all you know, my 4 year minimal success (won about $60k) is just variance.
