    Living in Las Vegas

Is living in Las Vegas viable for a non gambler? I have a degree in the sciences and I wanted to move out there to get a job and maybe a 2nd part time as well. Would I be able to find work in a lab? I'm thinking for a 2nd I could work as a waiter or bartender or even dealer? It would be nice to rebuild my bank and also have many decent games there to keep my game in shape. Looking for a place to start over and I figured as a card counter what better place than Las Vegas.......

It's a wonderful place to live and there are jobs aplenty. There have been several threads on this subject including a recent one, with good advice from knowledgeable locals' perspective.

If I were considering Vegas to live in, the major deal breakers for me are:

    1. The heat (weather kind). Even at sunrise, it's already 90F for 4+ months of the year.
    2. The people. Besides the drug and alcohol addiction, Vegas has the lowest higher education completion level in the country.

I like Vegas, but I bet sports and count cards. For a non-gambler, Vegas would have to be an awful place to live, unless one was a cocktail waitress or stripper. Seems like lots of crime and homelessness there. I can deal with the heat because its dry heat, but if one doesn't gamble, there would be so many other better options, IMO.

I lived many years in Chicago so I understand you want to get away from Wisky winters, but why not try Arizona, Florida or California instead?

No thanks. I wouldn't live there either. I prefer 4 season locations as you can always put a coat on when it's cold, but there's not much you can do for triple digit temps.

One positive about Vegas is it's a good travel hub with cheap flights out.

Hey, I am thinking of relocate to LV too but as retiree I do not have to deal with job, school for kid or traffic but the hot summer and health care issue in post #4 makes me hesitate. I may rent a studio or share room in a house at working neighborhood for few months to see if I should live there long term. Nothing can substitute for being there and make your own judgement. I appreciate all ideas to help me make sensible decision.

Retired here from Southeast US in 2010. Live in Summerlin area which we find to be very much like the upscale suburbs of the city we came from.

The weather is hot and dry (humidity is not really an advantage back east) and rain is rare. But if you need to vary your weather, our airport has economical fares to damn near anywhere.

I do gamble (although much less now due to other things) but golf, eating out, entertainment, now the hockey team and the Raiders NFL all are here or coming to town. Any "act" that is any good will be in Vegas at some time.

Housing is once again becoming more expensive but way less than California. And we have no state income tax (they make some of it up on car license and other taxes).

Saw negative comment about traffic and must say that opinion must be relative. Vegas roads (not just interstates) are much better and traffic is not bad when compared to where I was. People still drive like their hair is on fire, but try California interstates for some real fun.

Overall, I would give Vegas an 8 out of 10 as a place to retire. Have no need for job market but my perspective is Vegas is booming in multiple areas and directions.

    Good luck.....

The answer still eludes me but I'm gonna try out the French part of the country and see what happens......
I think WI offers some pretty damn good games. I sent you an email a few months back with some suggestions. I don't know if you got it or not.

If you need a certain job or a specific field....then you should probably do some research and figure out what kind of companies even operate in LV, figure out which, if any, have job openings for which you qualify.

Idk what kinda games you'd want to play, but there are an abundant amount of double deck games that can be played with red chips. Obviously there's risk in playing DD games in LV, but to each his own.
