My locals give you "free play" coupons but you can not bet it alone, you have to match the value of coupon with your chip/s. Say coupon is $10 so you have to bet 2 red chips with it. If hand won you get 4 reds but they take the coupon.

That is called a match play coupon.

There is a lot of loose terminology being used in this thread.

    • Free Play usually refers to machine play which you must cycle through once. It is best to use this on a high variance machine.
    • Free Bet usually refers to a coupon which you can play instead of a cash bet. The conditions under which they take the coupon vary, ranging from always (worst) to after the bet is resolved (i.e.not after a push -- better) to once the bet loses (best).
    • Promotional Chip is the same as a free bet.
    • Match Play usually refers to the type of coupon described by cc12b. You have to match the coupon with some live money. These are usually taken always or after the bet is resolved.

This article by Grosjean tells you how best to play the non-machine varieties. This comes up often enough that it really should be in a sticky or a FAQ somewhere. In a nutshell, high variance games are best.

Depends on what else you can be doing or if playing longer on VP would actually take time away from that. You could put in your regular BJ session then play off the FP afterwards. Playing 25c denom, you’re probably going to end up in the 160-240’ish range. Playing 10c or 5c, that range is going to be tighter. If you play 400 hands per hour (slow for VP standards), then it’ll take you 24 minutes to play off that FP on quarters. If you actually play VP and play at like 800 HPH it’ll take you 12 minutes to do that.

I generally prefer to take my time and play lower denom stuff when picking up freeplay and will play 25c denom instead of 50c or $1. It takes longer, sure, but it’s not like I’m tapped for time and I’d be missing out on something else. If I am short on time or have a bunch of FP to do, then I’ll play higher. I mostly just don’t want to be in a situation where I’m on a good +EV play and I’m not winning any money because I’m running bad on picking up. Playing 25c means I’ll be in the 95%+ return on FP, almost guaranteed, pretty quickly (in terms of FP picked up).

One of my local casino offers 2 types of promo free play: 1) is in form of chips, you use it just like the regular chips you buy in, 2) is in form of coupons as I described in post #15 if you get natural they pay your chips 3:2 and even money for the coupon . Say you bet 2 reds and $10 value coupon and get bj, they pay you 3 reds for your real reds and 2 for the coupon. I prefer the chips type but I do not know how/why they setup your promo that way.
