Most casinos have smoking and non-smoking tables. If you're at a smoking table, it would be inappropriate to ask someone not to smoke. If the casino does not have any smoking restrictions, I would still not ask someone to refrain. It's not appropriate. I realize how awful that can be, but you need to move not them. Just my view....

I always ask them to put up the no smoking sign for me. Especially if there is no designated non smoking area or that area is very small..... I don’t need second hand smoke in my lungs. Just my thinking....

If I sit down at a table where no one is smoking, I ask if anyone minds if we request the table to be non-smoking. If no one objects, we ask the pit boss. The dealers love this as even if they smoke they detest second hand smoke.

If someone says they are a smoker, they will usually keep the ash tray on the away from me. Politeness goes a long way.

How in the world would asking someone to not smoke be inappropriate?

Especially if you were there first?

You don't have to be an ass about it, just ask them if they'd mind not smoking. Most smokers realize they are harming themselves and others, and are willing to step away. In fact, in my experience if a smoker joins a table, the generally ask if anyone minds if they light up. At that point, you just say you'd appreciate if they didn't, and thank them for asking.

Reminds me of this old guy with emphysema, an oxygen tank, hacking like no tomorrow, smoking and spitting up blood. I politely suggested he stop smoking, before blowing us all up. Of course, he was outraged, and exercised his extreme umbrage by going to the 6-5 table.

    Seniorism

If I sit down at a table even if its smoking one, I wont be a jerk and light up with out seeing anyone is bothered.
Sometimes ill use this to my advantage
During neg count, ill step back away from table to smoke, looks like im being very polite and considerate ( sometimes non smoking tables are $25 min )

Other times ill just make sure to blow smoke towards ceiling etc.

If I have seniorism, someone sits down while ive already been at the table, i will flat out say no, non smoking tables are over there .
