No way can you get 4,000 hours in in a year. That's 11 hours EVERY single day. Only way to do that (IMO) is if you find a tolerant store that lets you camp out forever, but even then you'd probably only be able to get away with a tight spread....and it'd be absolutely miserable. No way can you play decent stakes, plus the travel required due to backoffs, AND get 4k+ hours in a year. Actually, maybe just mayyyybe it could be possible if you had someone drive you from city to city and you slept while that person was (were? Don!!!!?) driving. But that's just gonna turn into a goat rope.
I'd go with "were," but it's a tricky construction.

I've done a few 30 hour weeks in times past. To be honest it was absolutely exhausting. I'd rather notch few hours a couple days a week rather than grind it out like that.

I've read of a famous AP who practically lived in a casino and managed an amazing average of 100+ hours a week. I can't fathom what that would do to your mental health..

500 to 800 hours a year is more realistic and already a decent amount of hours for full time play .

I don’t think it can be done. And even if it could, it would be the most miserable way to live. The most I’ve ever played in one month was close to 100 hrs and I didn’t like it. I average 40 to 50 hrs a month. Sometimes less and sometimes more. If I were playing 4,000 hrs a year, I would absolutely lose my mind by week two. Even 2,000/year sounds crazy to me. Don’t try to over-do it .

If I didn’t have a family, I’d try to play 800 to 1,000 hrs. But for me, that isn’t realistic, so that’s why I will cap out at 500 or 600 hrs.

Given various factors, a decent living balanced with family responsibilities.

I'm guessing for myself about 200-250 hours this year. I'm in retirement mode, though I do regular work a few hours a week. I'd play more if I had local stores, so, since I don't, I'm not unhappy with current play levels.

Ideally, that’s where I’d like to get to. I’m hoping to transition out of full time play and do it part time. 200 hrs sounds good to me. It doesn’t take long for the novelty of playing blackjack for a living to wear off. But until then, I’ll keep grinding.

I would really like it if my wife joined me on a few trips, but this isn't really her thing. She doesn't mind me going, especially since the house vig has enured generously to her favour this year. That of course, supplements the secret stash that I don't know about

Same here! My wife has joined me on a few trips, but she doesn’t enjoy the casino setting, and frankly, I don’t blame her. Most trips that my wife has accompanied me on had more site seeing/hanging out with each other than they were based around blackjack. Back when I used to play rated, I used to get some comped flights/hotels to some cool places, so she’d occasionally go on those trips with me. Obviously, she has no interest in driving around in the middle of nowhere Iowa or Wisconsin with me LOL.

I tried to get my wife to be a reader. At 5'2 she'd be perfect, but refused to get involved.

Joe748 played an entire year traveling non stop from casino to casino and played about 1800 hours, getting about 200 back offs. He pretty much maxed the year on just playing, living out of his car.

35 hours a week, non stop travel, 4 backoffs a week, laundry, dirty underwear, sweaty shirts, body odour, cheap hotels, eating shit on the run - no way to live. Just my humble opinion.

I could be wrong, but I think he played 1,000 hrs in his first year. But yes, he played a lot that first year. He basically lived on the road. But at the time, he had no g/f and he has no kids. That makes things easier in this line of work.
