Usually, players staring out acquire a whole library of books, from Beat the Dealer, to Revere, to Wong's Professional Blackjack, maybe a couple of Snyders books, but they mostly cover all the same thing and some of them are outdated. If I were recommending to a new playing in today's environment (which I guess I am), I would recommend 3 books. Modern Blackjack by our host Norm Wattenberger, Advanced Tactics in Casino Advantage Play by Abrah Alexander and Blackjack Attack 3, by Don Schlesinger. Modern Blackjack and Advanced Tactics really focus on today's games, which are quite different from the better games of yesteryear and need to be attacked differently. An additional benefit is that the authors both participate on this site. Blackjack Attack 3, is a really strong reference book that you will keep going back to time and time again.

Edit: I did not include Exhibit CAA as I felt the OP was inquiring about basic card counting material.

I will add knock out blackjack to the list. I think it does a fine job with explanations for the brand new player.

There is no one book that will teach you everything. There is no best book.
With that being said the books I enjoyed most were Blackbelt in blackjack by Snyder, professional blackjack by Wong, and the worlds greatest blackjack book (but ignore the hi-opt or whatever count the use)
the books KJ suggested are also great. IMO you should have read at least a few books (I suggested or otherwise) before BJ attack 3 and Abrahms book otherwise the material will likely go over your head. But those two KJ suggested are really good for trying to break past the newbie ranks.

Add to this list . . . "Blackbelt in Blackjack"

Excellent, if the poster wants one book to read.

I second the vote! I just finished it. It is a great book for beginners as well as more experienced players. There are a lot of great practice suggestions as well as practical advice.

I would not recommend that you read Blackjack Attack if you are just starting out in the game. You will appreciate it more once you have absorbed the basics (or more than) of the game.

I think you should read something that is newer. Like Modern Blackjack, blackbelt in blackjack is good, and Knock Out Blackjack is good. I don't have anything against Stanford Wong Professional blackjack but I just think that a good beginner book is something modern that keeps up with the evolution of the game.
