Stupidest idea ever? MGM to set up private SWAT teams of security guards

I am always concerned about violence by casino security guards against me, especially in Las Vegas where there have been so many violent incidents, and at Eldorado in Reno, where a guard killed a patron a couple of years ago. Now this!

MGM creates ‘civilian version of a SWAT team’ following Las Vegas shooting

... The former Metro and military officers will spearhead the response to any emergencies at MGM’s properties and train other security personnel. Each supervisor will work with a specific MGM resort but will be capable of working at its other properties. Trainers will not be tied to specific properties.

This seems absolutely insane to me. Will removing a drunk become an "emergency"? How about backing off an AP? Remember the shooting into a car windshield by a guard in the parking garage of South Point? The guard was never criminally charged.

Though the leaders initially hired may be qualified, how are they going to fill out the ranks with competent people? Cronyism?

With the generally lawless culture of casino security departments, how can they be trusted to perform properly and not be overzealous? If someone doesn't come to their senses and stop this idiocy, I think this will eventually end in a totally avoidable tragedy.

Clearly, a not so well thought out response to the shooter who killed dozens from a Mandalay suite vantage point. Former military and police personnel suggests a certainty that these individuals will be armed, and prepared to shoot.

Yankee law, in some circumstances, is incomprehensible to me. Will these individuals have the right to skirt the law, much like US based bounty hunters? Is Bear correct that the filled out ranks consist of individuals just itching to display their level of authority - and at what stage will the circumstances of engagement be relaxed to exert some real hurt in not so serious situations.

A disaster waiting to happen, with the soon to follow thereafter lawsuit and possible criminal action. MGM companies almost certainly engage risk management personnel. It would be tough to imagine how this scenario got through that department.

A knee jerk reaction to the lawsuits they are getting or expect to get.

Why can they not depend on law enforcement for such, they certainly are the main source of revenue that finances the all government functions in Vegas.

Certainly agree it is a bad idea.

It's a national trend. CBS News reported 6/27/16 that the Feds have spent $1.6 Billion on war arsenals for non-military agencies, including FDA and the Smithsonian. According to Radley Balko of WaPo, the Police have access to surplus military equipment, including APCs. Ike was right; the military-industrial complex is up to no good!

PSOs can carry (military-grade) firearms in the US?

Yikes. Yeah this is a bad idea.

You're late, Norm. The Feds have already spent $313,958 on paintball equipment, per CBS News, quoting American Transparency, a non-partisan watch dog.. Remember paintballs don't kill people, people kill people lol.
