I personally do think Maguire was player X. (spoiler alert)! If you remember the scene when “player X” first arrives he’s about to introduce himself for the first time and say his name, and Molly stops him and says “oh I know who you are.” To me obvIously implying it’s someone famous. But again, nothing is confirmed. I also do not believe that out of the goodness of her heart she ran these games and relied on “tips” and that’s how she amassed 5 million dollars.
I lived in NYC, and have played in some big underground games as high as 25/50. I also use to deal in some underground games while in college. I was very much exposed to the underground operations of the underbelly of the underground poker world. There’s no way these games were operated without a rake being taken all the time. I’ve never even heard of high stakes games just being run and relied on for “tips.”
