    cheating in California card rooms

I heard from very reputable sources that a lot of cheating goes on by card rooms in California. I think that when it occurs, it usually has to do with someone trying to bank (act as the house) which really annoys them. I wonder if they ever try cheating against a normal AP that is just trying to beat the bank by finding an advantage in the game. It seems like if they can just back you off, why would they resort to cheating? Is California gaming just not strict on this? I'd like to try some normal (non-banking) advantage plays there, but I'm kind of paranoid that I could lose a bunch, chalk it up to bad luck, and then spew most of my bankroll before I realize I've been cheated. Any relevant info would be appreciated.

I too am interested in this. I would also like to know what happened in the California Legislation to allow card rooms? I expect Tx to possibly go this route.

Are you talking about a specific game or all card room games?

All non Tribal casinos in Cali are non house banked. A corporation or team/group will buy the table and the house deals the game, with the exception of poker. The house makes their money on the vig/collection. There is little incentive for the dealer/house to cheat. However, the banking group can turn a dealer, and that has happened and is very possible. Look for second dealing, clumping, and false shuffles. The Tribal casinos are more heavily regulated and have little incentive to cheat, I am not saying it does not happen, just that it is not as common.

(This is at least my understanding of cali regs).

I heard this from the last 10 minutes of the gambling with an edge radio show published on 12/14/17. They were mostly talking about pai gow poker but seemed to imply that it could happen with any game.

If you suspect you're being cheated you might pick up Zender's book on Casino Cheating at Blackjack. Anything in particular you think seems fishy?

    Cheating

Well, to begin with many (most ?) APs suspect cheating when they lose. We tend to forget that 1:10,000 does happen from time to time, and it can and will happen to us.
Having said that, when the game is between a corporation and ploppies, I would assume a lower barrier/cost to cheat on their part.

If the cheating is done well, conventional wisdom is that you cannot spot it even if you know what you're looking for. If it's done badly - then yes, you might see the second get stuck on its way out, or get three 5 of Diamonds in your hand playing a DD game....

Stop playing hand dealt games, even for as little as 5 dollars
As a pit guy once told me "You would be surprised as to how quickly the losses add up when the dealer is dealing seconds

If it's pitch I ensure the dealer is wearing leather gloves.

Very few pitch games in CA card rooms. It’s no secret that many corporations/card rooms are illegaly banking their owm
games with front companies or that there’s virtually no oversight/regulation by the state, there’s been more federal raids in CA card rooms since 2011 than in the rest of the entire US gaming combined (mostly things like loan sharking, money laundering, ignoring title 31/bank secrecy requirements) despite only being around 70-75 card rooms.
