Civil War reenactments are big in areas of the country. One of the biggest is at Gettysburg. They use real black powder but no projectiles. It is not unheard of for participants to be shot by a ramrod that, in the heat of battle, was not removed from the barrel before the muzzleloader was fired.

Sturbridge Village, in Mass does reenactments every year, on a much smaller scale than the one you are talking about.

For the main players, the movie, or documentary, is a lose/lose situation which I would tend to believe is the reason for the long delay.

If they reveal too much, they have shot themselves in the foot.

If they reveal very little, the thing won't be very good.
