Thread: Burn Card

    Burn Card

At my two stores, less than half of the dealers show the burn cards. When I ask nicely to see it, some dealers will show it, no problem. Other dealers either refuse to show the burn cards and just stare at me, or they make some snarky comment (and maybe they show it, or they don't show it).

It's only one or two cards per shoe, but I like the free information. Is asking bad for my cover? Should I just keep my mouth shut?

If it's a 6 or 8D shoe, the info is of negligible value and certainly could raise suspicion. I wouldn't do it.

Also, always assuming the burn card is a 10 is actually slightly -EV. Just disregard it entirely, don't assign it a value.

If they show it then I got more information, if not then shut up.

Of course, I was talking about making assumptions when not knowing the card.

I ran a sim on CVData one time to see the difference between counting the burn card vs not counting the burn card, and the difference in EV between those two sims was just a few cents. Don’t sweat it.

    Short answer, yes.

Longer answer--think like a casino. Why do you care? Are you a counter? A nut case? Your job is to look like a gambler. Would a gambler care?

For cover, we say "good luck" because that's what gamblers say. You'd never tell an old lady on a scooter at a penny slot "good variance" would you?

Don't ask. If you see it great. And if it's the 8 of clubs, leave the table. Everyone knows that is bad luck, and you will lose every fourth hand and get blackjacks right after you lower your bet. DON'T PLAY IF THE BURN CARD IS THE 8 OF CLUBS!

    You have been warned....

Most places will not show the burn card even if you ask. I did play at a place that would show the burn card upon request. I told the dealer I would like to see the burn card every time. The problem with this was the dealer would yell out at the top of his lungs every damn time "showing the burn card." Anyway, for some reason I'm now flat betted there.

Some dealers show you the burn card(s) without having to ask, which is always nice of them. Knowing or not knowing the burn card on a 6 deck shoe makes very little difference and casino management knows this. It moves the pen by one card. It means a lot more on DD and SD. I question pinging on the dealer to show the burn card if they don't readily do it, especially if you don't know the dealer, the casino.

I know places where the burn card is considered a courtesy to the player, and is shown. One of these places has really deep pen. Sim really deep pen, and the difference 1 card can make - as in 5.5/6.

The sim I ran was on a 6D game with bad pen. I imagine the difference is a little bigger with excellent pen like that.

I agree because you might hear the dealer say in a louder tone we have a counter here, and if that is not bad enough, he/she might cut the next shoe a half deck shallower than the previous one.

If you see it great but I certainly don't ask for it. On shoes, sometime you can also see a card behind the cut. This requires a shoe without a lid. There are times where the rear-most card is seen if the cards aren't properly seated in the shoe.
