Does dealer owe the players a duty?

I was in a dd game, The count was neutral. I got an ace and a 2, the dealer's up card was 9. Then I hit, I got a 8. I figured my total was 11, so I hit again, got a picture, I said, 21, I won! The dealer said: you already won before you hit. LOL, I was hitting a 21. I made a stupid mistake. I just wonderer, does the dealer owe the players a duty , to advise them not to hit a 21?

No. In your example, it is obvious, but there are many commonly-misplayed hands in blackjack. The dealer cannot be expected to know correct strategy for every player on every hand.

The dealer doesn't owe you anything. But, the casino instructions to the dealer should be to tell you have 21 when you tried to hit.

When you say you won when you got to 21 I assume you are playing SP21 as in BJ 21 can still push. You are not allowed to hit a 21 in SP21 because by federal patent on the game they have to pay your 21 auto-win. Casino can't change the rules of a patented game without the patent holders permission. The patent holder would be insane to grant such a change.

As for the dealer being helpful, if they like tips they should be unless they know you are a stiff.

Only good dealers call out the hand totals. Bad dealers are silent dealing machines.

Years ago, in my red chip days, I accidentally asked fir a hit on my hard 20. Dealer was an asshole who didn't like me, commented as he said....okay, if you want to hit your 20, dealt the card and swept the money with the same motion. I called the critter over, Eco,wined what happened, further saying I didn't give a shit about the miney, further commenting that this asshole would never see another nickels tip from me.

Sometimes, you just need to get it out in the open.

On one of my recent blackjack trips, I actually did the same thing. I hit a multi-card hard twenty. Dealer could not help since it was face down. I always tell the dealer to speak up if I'm about to make a stupid move. It is an easy tip for them.

It was a DD game -- was it face up or face down?

When I dealt blackjack, I figured helping the players was a good idea. Give them proper basic strategy and all that, when asked. If they wanted to stand on a soft hand or hit a bad hard total, I'd ask if they were sure. Most of the time they were annoyed, so screw it, I'm not gonna help a player if he doesn't ask. Plus, most players are assholes and/or stupid to begin with, so no skin off my back if he wants to hit his hard 17. Obviously if a player was overall a normal person or half decent to deal to, it's a different case. But if an asshole has 20, asks for a hit, I'm giving him a card ASAP. If the player makes a stink about it, I'd at least be sure to tell the boss what happened (off the table let him know the player's an asshole).

Unfortunately, many dealers equate a player's lack of totally over-tipping with being an asshole....and I never really cared much for tips since it was split a million and a half ways.

I sometimes play with an asshole dealer who will tell people they have 11 when they have a soft 21, but he will inform them it's 21 if they try to hit. If I ask him what my hand total is, he'll just start saying random numbers. Toking has no affect, he's just an asshole.

More accurately, an asshole that hates the job.
