    Z.M.F. says ...

Never increase a bet more than double

Never cut back a bet by more than half.

True if playing unrated. However, if you follow optimal betting rules, play rated, have developed a good act and play short sessions, are aware of the presence or lack of heat, you can definitely violate the rules you mentioned. I routinely play a 6 deck game playing $10 on one hand, TC reaches +2, followed by act, I go to 2x$20. If count goes up, it's 2x $50, if count tanks, take a phone call, return the next round with $10.

    no hard fast rules.

Wow! This board has come a long way in a short period of time, in that ZeeBabar is now giving out lessons to Z.M.F. amazing.

hey, hey, no disrespect implied to anyone but my impression was that there were no hard and fast rules, that you guys have probably violated that rule a few times. Am I wrong? Even at low stakes red chip play with no heat, you would not risk doubling your bet plus some?

ZeeBabar, in your case I would not give it a second thought. You could have two max bets out of a $150 each and receive a soft thirteen and a soft eighteen with the dealer showing a five up card, and double the soft thirteen, and then stand on the soft eighteen, because you did not want to risk $600 all at once.

That was my point. The casino has nothing to worry about.

I usually spread from 25-300 (occasionally 50-500) and followed most of Don's suggestions in BJA3: I would almost never raise a bet after losing, would only occasionally drop my bet after winning, would never jump bets and would leave after showing my max bet (whether I was winning or losing). I tipped whenever I won and occasionally when I lost. I always stood on 16v10 and would only backcount for a round or two if at all. I would, however, leave when the count reached TC-2 unless it was very near the end of the shoe. I played once or twice per week for about 2 years. This morning, I had a good shoe where I won almost $3,000 playing heads up so I left. I returned in the afternoon on a new shift but got the tap almost immediately. I was about even at the store over my career although I think their books incorrectly indicated I was up by over 5K. In retrospect, I think my only real mistake was to use a player's card. I would caution other counters to avoid their use. Sucks to be banned!

Don, will you please chime in?

If you cannot afford a few bucks on THIS great work, then how

do you plan on playing blackjack (at least) moderately
    skillful?

25 to 300 is a pretty aggressive spread, even on a 6 deck game. I would spread less than that unless the rules are terrible.
