    .................

    computer question:

I know Facebook and Google are spying on users
if you for example search for camping equipment on another site while you're signed into these sites - then ads for camping equipment will show up on their pages

I don't like it - and always clear my history after being signed in on to these sites

my question is - do many other sites do this and/or have the capability to do this - but it's just not so easy to see?

my own guess is that only the most powerful tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter have the ability to do this

    but I'm not sure

    thanks

It's common and used by much smaller businesses.

It is very common and used by almost all companies, big or small, through Cookies. But finally someone stand with consumers and tries to keep companies from spying. Apple's latest Operating System gives consumers the option to set if they mind letting companies tracing their activities.

DoubleClick started this ages ago. They were acquired by Google 13 years ago. Apple is/was one of their customers. You can sign into Google and tell it not to personalize ads. You'll still get just as many ads; but they will be more random. Turning off cookies won't help.

Actually, it's the camping equipment site that has a deal with Google Ads.

    ................

it makes me wonder how much they can actually see
if I'm logged into FB - and I go to another tab - and log in to my bank - can they see all my login and password info and all the info from my bank account?
at least maybe their top people - administrators?

it's kind of scary - probably not much chance they'll try to compromise your bank account - but still - it's creepy

No, of course not. Google sees search terms and links you click on. Sites, like Macy's, see what products you view and partner with Google Ads.

Banks don't even know your passwords, just as I have no way of finding your BJTF password here even if I look into the database.

Cookie profiling (web profiling) is the use of permanent cookies to track a user’s overall activity online. This tracking does not just happen when you are on a particular site, but it occurs the whole time you are browsing. This kind of profiling activity is often done by marketers who buy advertising rights on thousands of popular websites in order to collect and collate cookie information and create a single “profile” of a user. Internet advertising targets potential customers based on what they browse the Internet. But passwords are scrambled and encrypted. Nobody else can see. This is regarding cookies. If your computers are infected with virus or malware, then someone may see your keystrokes.
