    Miscellaneous

I got the idea of posting a thread with this title from another website on gambling where it is a very popular thread where people can post tidbits on any subject not related to BJ that they don't want to start a thread about. A little bit like the Quotes thread. Maybe it will fly maybe not. Whatever. I think Norm doesn't want politics or religion though.

This is a story about a 94 year old candidate for a Nobel Prize. John Goodenough just submitted a patent for a revolutionary new battery.

Except that there are plenty of leaders who knew history and repeated the same mistakes. Over and over and over again.

Reminds me of all the tabloid ads from the 50's and 60's for carburetor add-ons that the government would not allow because it would put oil companies out of business.

Billy Walters, one of the most successful gamblers of all time, worth hundreds of millions of dollars mostly from sports betting, was just convicted of insider trading and is facing jail time. The Feds had tried him several times before on tax evasion charges and failed to get a conviction. He was teflon but now he's velcro. He said, "I just did lose the biggest bet of my life."

WinViewgames.com is a new legal u.s. sports betting site. you bet for free to win cash and prizes. legal in the U.S. since the player does not risk money; only time. i think. i think the main type of bets offered are proposition type bets. supported by advertising. this is brand new and sounded pretty interesting to me. i'm not sure about all the details. i may be missing something about this. i'm providing 2 links; a new york times article that appeared yesterday and a link to the company's website.

I recently got back into chess because I'm tutoring a student who wanted to learn the game.

I discovered this site chess.com which IMHO is really great. You can play against a computer on levels 1 thru 10 and it has tutorials and you can create an account and play against others who are online.

A lot of the stuff on the site, including playing against their computer is free. I'm actually not sure what they do charge for. Everything I've tried to do there has been free.

According to a post from a chess forum the highest level offered to play against, level 10, is the level of a chess Master. The only levels higher than that which are not offered are International Master and Grandmaster.

If a person learns and rises through all the levels, which is very difficult, they would be quite a good chess player.

As you may know, 21 years ago, (this is very old news but some may not be aware of this) IBM's deep blue computer beat chess Grandmaster Gary Kasparov. It was the first time a computer was shown to be able to beat one of the worlds' greatest chess players.

I linked the site and a story about IBM's computer beating Kasparov.

We should have a game. I'll even play black, If you promise that you're first move is pawn to king 4, I'll use my modified Sicilian. I call it - The Inverted Snatch - seriously.
