A good starting bankroll is around $5,000. You won't be able to make much of an hourly, but your primary concern at this stage should be gaining experience and learning from your mistakes. Once you achieve a degree of proficiency you can invest more and start increasing your hourly rate.

IF....you only play at positive True Counts! (he was speaking of wonging, make sure you understand the difference AND that does not remove variance)
Luck is nothing more than probability taken personally!

Do you have additional disposable income youd be willing to commit and what's your risk tolerance are two questions that you really only know that factor in. The majority of skilled experienced players started with much smaller bankrolls than they would recommend. Your skills are much more important than bankroll to start. You could start with 500k and poor skills and be on the road to ruin, while if your game is airtight and you have a reasonable chance with 5k (more would certainly be better) if you can avoid negative hands and early negative variance.

Like DonS says, ruin tends to catch you early. It is a race of increasing BR as a function of time versus the negative variance. If you survive long enough you should be growing your BR which reduces your risk of ruin at the same stakes. This assumes 100% reinvestment of winnings. If you take from your winnings you are much more certain to hit ruin than your RoR says you are.

Expenses are a huge factor unless you cover them from your pocket rather than your BR. Ideally you want incentives to play to cover all expenses when you start out. This may mean making the rounds on a given day to have many casinos incentives cover your expenses for the day. Planning trips to hit higher incentive days is important. Hitting smaller table minimum times can increase a BR challenged players spread by decreasing their minimum bet while not changing the advantage part of the ramp. Also the tables might not be as crowded. Table crowding can be one of the biggest hurdles for the BR challenged player.

Whatever you decide as a good starting BR/RoR increase that bank by 50-100%. If you have outside income plan to contribute an amount equal to your starting BR over the course of the year.

Playing 8 deck, better have a huge spread, 25-1 or higher, or you will never make any money. Better yet, back count (wonging) if possible. Start betting with at least .5 advantage, with your game that would be at least a true 2, if bad rules true 3. I will give you an ex-if you start betting with .5 advantage and you bet 300$, you will make $1.5 each time you bet. If you bet $50 you make 25 cents.
