I really don't like this division between amateur and pro. There are amateurs in most fields that are better than many pros in the same field. Golf is a good example. Olympian medal winners have historically been amateurs. Also, pro does not mean that you only have one source of income.

Not exclusive source but main source.

Norm and Jabber' comments are both correct.

The term, "professional" is rather "squishy".

Too much connotation and denotation "noise"

That being said, I think that the definition can

be ~ "earns a majority of income via gaming

and couldn't afford his/her lifestyle without it."

You can have investments, or a rich spouse that are a larger source of income, and still be a professional.

Albert Einstein was not a pro physicist when he developed the theory of relativity. OTOH, hookers are professionals.

My definition of a Professional Blackjack player is one who takes and earn money from the casino over the long run in Blackjack using the facts, information, and skills acquired through practice and having the habit of sticking to the rules, strategies, and methods of advantage play. A person doing the opposite to me mean he is a gambler not a Professional Blackjack player. Recreational Advantage Players are not gamblers in my definition.

Maybe I am talking out of turn but has anyone noticed that there were only two responses that dealt directly with OP's question? The rest of this thread consists of "DID, DID NOT" posts. I have my own thoughts about the thread but won't pile on. I am going to go look for something helpful.

Actually, that's pretty good! Most threads go from a legitimate blackjack question to what the fourteenth poster had for breakfast within a couple of hours. As a group, possibly the most ADD-prone collection of people I've ever seen. Hard to imagine how anyone keeps the count at the table, as there isn't one person out of 50 who can stay on topic for more than ten minutes.

    You decide for yourself.

This is is actually a perfect example of zMF stating things authoritatively without knowledge or facts of at least half of what he is talking about. There are many others that have material relevance unlike this example, that if you play full time in areas not related to card counting for as little as two MONTHS, that you will see to be at least partially false. This is really not debatable, the statements are out there; and no I'm not educating people on it.

About Blackjack: The Forum

BJTF is an advantage player site based on the principles of comity. That is, civil and considerate behavior for the mutual benefit of all involved. The goal of advantage play is the legal extraction of funds from gaming establishments by gaining a mathematic advantage and developing the skills required to use that advantage. To maximize our success, it is important to understand that we are all on the same side. Personal conflicts simply get in the way of our goals.
