It depends on number of hands I'm playing and casino tolerance but anywhere from $300-$600 on quarter tables.

I've never bought in at the cage, but having black chips in the pocket is great.

Buying in too big draws attention right away while buying in repeatedly might make you look like a tilting gambler.

Some places the dealer will go ahead without the floors approval if the buy-in is a few hundred dollars. This is good.

I have opted towards buying in smaller amounts. I buy in for $200 or $300 at the Quarter table. My view is that they don't think you are a serious AP with a sufficient bank role to trouble them so they often either nod when away and the dealer calls a buy in and walk over later or barely glance at you. when folks buy in for $1k or higher they walk over, check out the money laid out, check that the dealer has the correct amount and take a good look at you.

Sometimes, the count is positive and you lose the small buy in, you can do the steaming act, show disgust, take another $200 out and plop the whole thing down like a person who has lost control.

The ideal situation is to keep a stash of chips for the regular casinos that you play at. Another idea is to buy chips at the craps table - place a few bets and then move on like an anxious gambler. If you're playing green chips, I don't see any problem in buying in for $500. That's an appropriate amount for a $25 or $50 min table and shouldn't raise an eyebrow. The idea of buying at the cage is interesting. I've never done it, because I've heard some casinos will allow and some won't allow it. So I was concerned that since it might be out of the ordinary, it might raise my profile.

I usually buy small, $200 - $300 at a quarter table. Frequent buy ins can be disguised as wong out points (if you have to "run to the ATM") and also it sometimes annoys other people to the point they leave the table.
