    Windows 10 warning

This morning, my GF's PC updated to Win10 while she was eating breakfast. She said that the Win10 update window came up, and she x'ed out as always. I found an article from yesterday. It appears that Microsoft sneakily changed the wording and actions of the little Window that comes up saying you can upgrade for free. In the past, if you x'ed out, that meant no. They changed it so that x'ing out means yes. See: http://www.pcworld.com/article/30734...upgrading.html

Same thing happened to me. 12:45am'ish (PST), it just starts updating. A few minutes before that, it asked if I wanted to upgrade and I hit the "No, remind me later" or whatever button. Was working on an unsaved file at the time, but nothing that wasn't replaceable was lost. I think Windows 10 is trying to make Internet Explorer "a thing" again.....NOPE!

Same thing happened to my wife. She had 8.1 so it wasn't a big deal for her. For me though it would be. I am running Win 7 and prefer to keep it that way. What MS did was change Win10 to a "Recommended" update. So if you have your computer set to automatically install recommended updates you are going to get it. For my own machine I don't have auto upgrades. When I scan for updates I can choose which to install and which not to install. That is really the easiest. If you do searches on the web you will find all kinds of bizarre things that are suggested. Stuff like editing the registry and other hocus pocus. The absolute easiest thing is to just set windows so that it doesn't install updates automatically. You can thank MS marketing for this kind of crap. However, I will install it if it will prevent the Verite dealer from getting so damned many 21's!

I ran GWX, so I'll never be bothered with Win10 prompts again. This computer is 4 years old and runs Win7. It will die with Win7.

I went through that as well. But the folks at MS are aware of that and it seems that they have worked their way around it.

I stopped GWX and am OK for now. I ran the update on a backup PC. It destroyed it completely. Went into a constant loop and wouldn't allow a revert. I had to restore it from a backup. Can't upgrade on my machine anyhow as I have unsupported devices and software.

No worries, I'm running Windows 95. Anyone have a 98 floppy I can have?

Just looked through my diskettes. Found a Win95 boot disk. Also found BJ Forum Winter Issue 2000 table conditions.

    Hey guys,

I used this to keep my home machines, except one, from upgrading without permission. It's a stand-alone app from a security specialist that's been around for a while so I trust him. Download it from the link on this page, run your AV on the file (just in case) and then follow the instructions on the page. If you need any assistance, feel free to poke me.

I kind of like my win 10 now that they have most of the bugs taken out of it.

My wife likes hers as well. But just understand that Win10 is super intrusive about what you are doing. The replacement for Siri? It remembers EVERY question you ever ask it. So don't ask it where to find hookers in Nevada. You might just find an advertisement for the Mustang Ranch in your in box.

The answer to where you find hookers in Nevada is "Nevada". You find them whether you want or not.
