Do Blackjack tables ever post a loss?

This is a question I have had, but haven't seen it brought up before: does a given blackjack table ever post a loss in a given day, week, or even month??? Let's assume that there is no cheating, dealer/player collusion, or some sophisticated AP technique. Also assuming a reasonable amount of activity occurring at the table. I'm just talking about crappy variance on the side of the casino.

I guess the better question would be at what point would a casino raise eyebrows due to a poor performing table.

Absolutely. In fact, in a normal casino, a roulette table will post a loss in one day a significant percentage of the time. Can be as high as 30%, but varies enormously by volume and bet variance. Large casinos can even post a loss for an entire quarter for all games, if one whale nails them hard. It's all about the long run.

ATLANTIC CITY — In a normal month, casinos rake in about 10 percent to 15 percent of the chips players buy at a blackjack table, experts say.

But last month, the take at two Atlantic City casinos flew in the face of conventional wisdom that "the house always wins."

The Tropicana lost more than $1.86 million at its blackjack tables, while the Borgata narrowly avoided a loss, collecting less than $1 million on nearly $75 million in chips purchased, just over a 1 percent take. Most of the other casinos in Atlantic City did much better at the blackjack tables in April, led by Caesars, which made $7.6 million.

Daniel Heneghan, a spokesman for the state Casino Control Commission, said the proportion of the Tropicana’s loss was unprecedented in the state since the inception of casino gambling in 1978.

Can't recall where I read this, but some tables at busy establishments will take colossal beatings for a couple of weeks.

The tables are like APs: even though they have the edge, they eat the variance sandwich, same as us!

Highlights of November Revenue Report for A.C. casinos:

    The four worst performers:

ACH: looks moribund. 1.1 M at table games and 7.3 at slots is absurdly low.
Trump Plaza: 1.9 M at table games and 6.7 M at slots.
Golden Nugget: 1.7 M at table games and 7.3 at slots.
Resorts: 3.3 M table games and 7.7 slots.

Taj Mahal: CRAPS tables lost 599 K (on 5.9 M) for a significant loss of 10.1%

Caesars: lost 3.8% at Baccarat and won only 1.1% at mini-baccarat -- losing about 100 k between them

    Tropicana: lost 5.5% on $100 SLOTS (
    -$77 K)

Thanks for getting me on the right track ZM_Flash. I was blown away by how much money the casinos make off their penny slots!

Interesting. I didn't realize that this information was public.

Intuitively, I had presumed that the tables would rarely see any sort of extended loss due to the large frequency in number of hands they see at the edge earned off ploppy strategy. Again, this is assuming no cheating or advanced AP strategy raking money from the flow.

After realizing that such losses are fairly common for a table, which has an environment built around producing an advantage for it, it makes me wonder how an AP is even capable of making it in this game.

This goes to show the importance of an adequate bankroll to be successful. Without an adequate bankroll you are still counting on getting "lucky." As a result, would that make those trying to play at an advantage with an inadequate bankroll "Gamblers"?
