Newbie here and want to be good at Blackjack

    Hello all,

First things first. My apologies if I posted in the wrong section. I am a NEWBIE to this forum thing and Blackjack lol. Anyway, I am currently deployed and took in interest in Blackjack. I be playing with co-workers all the time. I just know the basics: hit, stand, and split. I have been doing really good and winning a lot of FAKE money lol They seem to think I am lucky. Hey, maybe that's true.....or, I just don't know what I'm doing and be making the right calls at the right time It got me thinking about really learning how to play Blackjack and be good at it. I even started playing Blackjack by myself, waiting for work to do. I started reading online about blackjack and been to a lot of different websites(some I like more than others) and download some ebooks. I started researching everything from the basics to card counting to hitting/standing/splitting certain numbers. Of course, I came across the story of the M.I.T students. NOW THAT was tight and seem pretty fun lol For the record, I'm not trying to "Put a team together." I just thought it was a pretty cool story. Anywho, glad to be a part of the forum. Looking forward to reading every post on here and broadening my knowledge in the game of Blackjack. Again, my apologies if I posted in the wrong section.

Welcome aboard. First is Basic Strategy. You do not know B.S. until you could do it in your sleep. I would recommend getting Professional Blackjack by Stanford Wong. Then after you know BS then go to the deviations. And practice, practice and practice. Oh and get CVBJ, you can't live without it.

Blackjackinfo.com has a great guide to learning blackjack, starting from absolute beginner.

When you read stuff, make sure it's actually credible. If it's talking about voodoo or hunches or progressions or...it's most likely not reliable. If you have questions post 'em here!

Basic Strategy is the correct call. Its like anything worthwhile, you must learn the fundamentals first. This site is great for specific questions you will have naturally as you progress and remember there are NO stupid questions so feel free to ask. I suggest never giving info that could reveal your locale (like some extra stupid newbies do, namely me months ago) and go thru the training pages at Blackjackinfo.com as recomended by RS. Some books would be "Blackbelt in Blackjack", Basic Blackjack by Stanford Wong, The theory of Blackjack by Peter Griffin and Wongs Prof.BJ mentioned above. CVBJ has drills for your basic strategy and i still do them incessantly. get tons of decks of cards and practice with at least 6 at a time. glue half/full/two/three decks together and practice eyeballing the tray...the list is endless to improve your skills. Feel free to PM me for suggestions i am more than happy to help you get started.

I learned a little bass ackwards. I wanted to learn to count so I had that down cold before I learned BS. I do suggest looking back at my own experience to get your ducks in a row and learn BS first then a simple counting method like hi-lo only after you can recite BS in your sleep. Just my thoughts anyway.

I am still learning and what I would like to get down is every math formula and shuffle tracking.

    "every math formula" ??

Formulas aren't necessarily memorized, they're created. Think of how you solved problems in calculus!

To clarify: ROR, EV, NRS shuffle tracking formula, Index generation formula, there are those giants that came before us who have done the equations already. BJmath.com has a ton, however when math isn't ones forte....

I would definitely start with BS. The key for me learning BS was to play with a sim that told me if I was making errors with the charts out at first. Here is a good free BS sim:

Norm's free online book is great as well:

I knew that I was going to do this as a business from the start so I have quite a substantial investment in software. The best I have found so far are Casino Verite (best sim by far) and Blackjack Expert for Android for my phone.
