    Splitting face and 10 card?

Ok as i come into my training in learning deviations and splitting 10's is part of this. Ive have never given this any thought and now wonder. When splitting 10 valued cards do they actually have to be pairs or can they just be any 10 valued card. For example can you split say a Jack of hearts and a Queen of clubs or a 10d and Ks?

You may split any ten value card.

Spliting a 20 WILL bring pit scrutiny; even when absolutely worthless plops do it.

Not always. Try it once or twice and see if anyone cares.

As zengrifter says, whether you can split actual pairs or any ten/face depends on the casino's policy - I've seen both even within the same area/country though it's more common in some places than others. It generally brings attention and I know of at least a couple of barrings shortly after plays like this (whether it was actually that play that tipped off the casino is obviously difficult to tell). At least a few players I know do not split tens because it's a quick way to get stopped (I don't unless I'm playing behind) - even below average casino staff know that only a particularly bad ploppy or an AP will do it and it doesn't take them long to decide which category to put you in...

Whether or not you decide to split tens...good luck!

If the pit doesn't notice, the bellowing of the ploppies and their stomping away in a huff can draw their attention. Of course, if your purpose is to chase ploppies away in a positive count, you couldn't choose a better way. Ploppies may leave the table after some other questionable (to them) plays; but splitting tens is the queen mother of all ploppy clearing plays.

i will definately put that in my repertoire! I am getting less and less patient with the "ploppininians" BC it always seems that they have radar for when the shoe gets warmed up. I can sit thru 4 decks of 0-3RC and just as soon as i hit 2 decks and TC 3 BAM!!!, here comes some card eater. I have spread to 2 hands, i complain like the "grumpy ol fart" that i am...but to no avail. The other day one had the nerve to ask me to move from 2nd base (which does better in my sims anyway) & where i was actually making a lil $... over to 5th spot on the table so his wife/gf/whatever could sit next to him!! Of course he had no clue that any seat can make a diff. but the arrogance peezd me off. It also made me realize that IT'S JUST A GAME for them. They don't THINK, they just bend over and grin!!! No wonder the casinos love these Rubes. They take the vapid idiocy of the slot machine straight onto the BJ table and don't miss a sip of the $8 bottom shelf vodka in the process! "What do I do here?" "Where's the lever to pull Mr. Dealer?" "Oh! you deal me cards and then I push what button???" "What do the green chips do?" "Why aren't there any bells and whistles?" "Oh look!! I won $500 dollars with THREE 21's in a row!!" "Ms. Dealer you can pay me in hundred dollar bills....oh i hafta go somewhere else to get my money?!" Meanwhile i'm at the other end of the table with homocide and "ploppy"cide on the brain from the 70 hands of table min. betting, counting, inane chit chatting cover, 6+ hours a day practice, and 32 units I end up losing when the shoe goes cold....cuz "Ploppasaurus" ate all the good cards. I welcome any/all tricks to get rid of the beasties. I know they don't like you to sit out hands...I could wong but not leave the table...what else??? Top Ten anti-plop techniques anyone??

This is massively overstated in the literature compared to my playing experience. Schlesinger seems to be the biggest propagator of the idea that ten-splitting brings unecessary heat, but his literature is also extremely conservative, recommending conservatism that would probably cost you half your EV.

Grosjean is extremely opposed to it when the game is valuable, and I respect his opinion in that sense.

But, if you're a red chipper playing on vacation and you split some tens with a $50 bet up, I hardly think that's going to burn out a game on its own.

I'm a conservative player, but I have split tens on occasion without the slightest heat. It all depends. If you pick your spots, you'll be okay, but if you have a rule of thumb to always split tens according to the count, you will definitely run into situations where you can burn out a game prematurely.
