The comp's will never negate the negative expectation that you will generate "playing for comps"
If playing rated, floors at MGM casinos will periodically write down your wager (or approximately what it looks like to them when observed from afar) and manually enter those bets in when closing you out.
There's a base number that is entered for your average bet, and the observed bets are what bumps it up or down.
From my experience at MGM casinos, floors can't give discretionary comps anymore and all comps are through your player's cards via "Express Comps" (no more printed slips from the pit).
Blackjack action won't generate much comps unless you lose a lot and bet a lot. Merely playing hours on end (which you shouldn't do if you're counting) won't do much for you in terms of comps.
Slot action and other games such as baccarat, craps, or roulette are what generates the casino rate offers or complimentary room offers.
As mentioned above, comp hustling is a whole different discussion.

You can definitely make more in comps free play and mailers from VP and probably other games than you give up in expected losses, assuming you play well on the correct games or machines. I know some folks that pickup several k in free play each time they go to vegas and are welcome back. They then use the time here to play BJ or just go to shows and enjoy the town. As for the locals VP circuit there is money to be made there too but it's a grind to say the least.
The problem is you need to play pretty big to get anything which means you will run into variance. Nothing sucks more than being down a coulple dimes to get a comp and fp when you came to play bj. Although that is the wrong way to look at it, that was how it was for me when my main game was bj and I played vp for comps.
Although a room at the SLS...lol a few thousand at the VP machine should be fine.
