Really disturbing. Because police stated ID required to be given to the casino as "police" action and coercion AND they stated that "he may have thought card counting was legal but not in their jurisdiction" with ordinances stating that. Which the newspaper specifically SAYS card counting is not prohibitted by state law. Only the use of mechanical devices regarding that.

Look at the bright side - this is worth at least mid 5 figures against the casino and police.

I hope he pursues it. In any case JUST to change police procedure. It's amazing what cops will do as we know. I don't always think it's badly intentioned but they start working an area and pretty soon they become "brainwashed" by the other side. I still can NOT believe he said card counting was ILLEGAL.

This greatly upsets me. Ignorance and stupidity have no bounds. Being illegally detained for abiding by the law is immensely wrong. I hope he will be able to extract damages from the casino and change the trooper's policies.

Did he handle this correctly? If it were me, would I have been wrong to try to head towards the exits and cause the casino to use additional force?

    Better call Bob! (Nersesian).

This should be a nice section 1983 claim.

This comes as no surprise. It is all too common that the police show up to be the casino's Yes-boy. Personally, I've never had a police officer show up and protect the law. It has always been bad news.

    OTOH, over a card counter......really???

Ferret, I doubt he had any real chance of "squaring things away". You should know, you've tried many a time. The only things I would have done differently would be:

    1. Confidently tell them they will be sued rather than beat around the bush.

    2. Make a more deliberate move for the door. A tackle is more egregious and more +EV.

    3. NEVER SHOW ID. See if the detaining threat was serious. Those 3 hours in the police department will be very lucrative. Of course, I understand not everyone wants to go that route.

    1) I would have tried to leave.
    2) I would have tried to legally provoke casino security into doing something stupid on camera.
    3) After being taken to the backroom I would have refused to provide ID to the police and let them take me to jail.
    4) Upon arriving at the police station I would have immediately contacted my attorney and sued all who were involved in the violation of my rights.
    5) I would try to get the media involved.

In this case, it appears that going to the backroom is what got him the video.
