    Oversized discard tray

After a week or two of practing deck estimation with a 6deck discard tray I enter my normal casino to find a different larger discard tray. I couldnt tell what size it was maybe 8, I will definitely have to study for that size now. The question is.. Could it be a possibility this was larger than 8? I could see a company making a larger discard tray to throw AP off. Would it be better just to study the decks naked (without a discard tray)?

I would do both. Doubt they do it to throw off AP's....there are other ways to do this. After a shoe ends and dealer puts all cards in the tray, notice how much room is between top of the cards and the top of the tray. I imagine they use an 8 deck tray.

It was likely an 8 deck discard holder, the casino probably has changed back and forth from 6 to 8 deck several times over the years and having the longer tray makes that easier to do. Many casinos also use 8 deck shoes on 6 deck games because they had 8 deck at one time and went to 6 deck and didn't want to have to buy new equipment. You just ignore the top 2 decks of empty space at the top of the 8 deck rack, easy enough once you get used to it.
