    Poker (Off Topic)

As a bit of diversion I played a free-roll today on Win Poker Network. There were 689 entrants and it paid down to nine places. I came in eighth so I was in the money. The game was Omaha NL. I also play an OK game of NL Hold 'em. I'm ashamed to post how much I won so don't ask. In the past I've played several hundred thousand hands of on-line poker. BTW, this is nothing when you compare this to the grinders.

If you're facing a bit of burnout, try playing some poker. You'll really appreciate blackjack after you log in a little time playing poker.

Nice post George, I know what you are talking about. BTW, reach a "freeroll" final-table and in this variant of poker is veeeery difficult, requires more discipline than NL Holdem. I bet Andy Bloch would like to spend more time at the blackjack tables than poker... Congrats

Poker is how I built my BJ Bankroll. I used to spend hours, I mean hours playing in the poker rooms. I miss it, but I haven't played Poker in well over a year. I'd need to play a couple of Bar league games before I went back to the real thing. Once I began BJ, I veered away from Poker. I had the reverse effect, I got burnout playing poker.

    Thx-Rudy:

Some time back eight of us had dinner at the Palms (Little Buddha). One of the eight people was Andy Bloch and as fate would have it, we ended up sitting next to each-other. The next couple of hours were spent chatting about his MIT days and going forward. Super nice guy. Now the WSOP used to televise Omaha games along with NL and Andy was a guest commentator. I never read a book on Omaha but learned by listening to Andy's comments as play was going on.

    Locks:

I also played a ton. For regular NL, I learned by watching Ed Miller and Dusty Schmidt (Leatherass) vids on Bet-the-Pot.
When playing multiple tables up to 16 at a crack on FTP, I watched vids by Ryan Duat at Cardrunners.

16 tables? That takes some quick thinking..

I haven't played recently and was and am a poker amateur but had good results playing micro/low limit ring games and sitn'gos on FTP and Pokerstars after reading Ed Millers Getting Started in Holdem using his small stack strategy and starting with good cards and paying attention to position when selecting starting hands. He wrote in GSiHoldem that this strategy works even when playing expert players. But of course that is controversial and he states that in his book too. It was quite enjoyable. I've thought of playing a few tourneys on my BJ trips but haven't done it yet.

Most multi-table players that I was in contact with played at least 24 or more tables. They were young kids that were really quick minded. I really didn't play a lot of hands. Big pairs and set mining was the order of the day. It worked OK until everyone else started doing it too. I enjoyed the quick pace and really did it to keep my mind sharp. Playing BJ doesn't do it as well as playing a lot of poker tables, at least for me.

I quit playing online several years ago when software programs and bots took over the game. I play lots in the casinos, along with BJ I a small market place, poker is an excellent complement to BJ. When the casino is busy play poker, when it is not busy play BJ.

I almost won an entry into the main event online. There were 12 players left and I was in the upper middle of the pack . I had pocket K's and flopped trips. The guy on a total bluff with nothing pushed me all in. He pulled 2 inside cards to fill a straight on 4th street and the river. Had the ridiculous long shot not come in I would have been chip leader at the final table. My work would have still been cut out for me to win it but I would have liked my odds.

Yep, the software, UIGEA in 2006, and Black Friday all successively made poker significantly less profitable. I think the software was the worst, though. It introduced all of these 2 + 2 grind-monkeys that didn't really know how to play, but could read a preflop chart and make clunky strategy adjustments based on their HUD. The money came out of the donkeys too fast after that.

I think it is so funny when a donk gets upset that you called his Ax suited that missed when he is aggressive and shows he is betting with nothing most of the time. His preflop bet made you small pair pot committed. Then he bluffs the flop and you of course call because you already decided preflop when you called him you were seeing it out to the river. They just keep saying how can you call with that lowsy hand. Well if the tight player raised like that preflop you probably would have folded but you have to play the player as much as the hand. Just be grateful these one dimensional idiots are there and hope he didn't get lucky on you.
