I know a hand-full of pros that consider 500-600 hours of play per year as a lot of play so I'm wondering what some of you guys play in a year. The most that I played was around 1000 hours and that was when the games were good and the tolerance level was not as bad a today.
Really valuable point. Seriously, how many hours can one actually play in acceptable circumstances? You can play 3,000 hours a year. But, there is no way they will be all under profitable circumstances.

It is hard for me to give a number based on hours because I don't track, nor record my play in segments of time. I use rounds played. And my time spent in casinos is all muddled together between actual play, eating several meal a day at casinos, travel time among casinos, and breaks, maybe watching a sporting event or even just watching folks for a while.
But if I were to guesstimate I would say 1000 hours a year, which is more than many, but far less than just a coupe years ago when I fist relocated to Vegas.

KJ: Tracking by rounds is an interesting way to do it. I used this method for the first 5 months of the year, then started by hours. Using CVCX makes it so simple since I play 2,6 and yes 8D games. I think I'm going to go back to rounds. Of your estimated 1000 hours a year, how many hours do you estimate that number is Vegas play?
I was curious when this was brought up by KJ. How do you determine the number of rounds you play? I am guessing you aren't wasting brain power counting them. There are better things to count if you want to count something else. My guess would be having a set answer based on pen/number of players/and maybe average count in the shoe.
About 80% of my play occurs in Vegas, George C. I specifically moved to Vegas, so I would have access to many game. I just don't care for alot of travel any more. Airport hassels, nights in hotel rooms, even nice hotel rooms, etc. Been there....done that. I am so over that. I prefer to retreat to my own bed in my own home as often as possible.
Yes Tthree, I estimate rounds using the number of cards in play divided by 2.75 cards per player (and dealer) per round.
I dunno finding it difficult to sustain an ev of 300 an hr without getting tossed everywhere...it seems like there has to be like 10-15 casinos threw out the country that can sustain the swings of chunky black play and higher ....I'm on a mission to find those casinos and prob going to travel 2 times a month by plane till I find them..I don't expect anyone to tell me where they are and it's actually kind of exciting to go on a domestic treasure hunt to find the tolerant casinos....I promise to play a aggressive as possible to truly know if I found a tolerant one or not...i think if one is tied down to one location where there are tons of casino then kj approach is best but I find it hard to get more than 10-15 hours a week of chunky black play...
also if traveling I think one has to play the count game aggressively in order to cover expenses ..I am doing my best to keep traveling cost to 10 percent of total ev even though that might not be a reality when going to a new area u never been where u don't have upfront comps since ur a new player and u might just want to take a plane to some random area to scout so the first trip really isn't even about maximizing ev...

I must be missing something, I just went to Vegas for the first time, where are the games worth playing? I am in Hayward Ca now but from the south originally, so I guess you know where I played. I bought Wong's paper and couldn't find a good game on the list, nor when I went there. And why does everyone talk bad about down town?
I am not sure what you want from me, a list of games that I play?? That's not going to happen. If you have been to Vegas, got off the beaten path (strip & downtown) and found nothing playable and see nothing playable on CBJN, I am guessing the issue lies with our differing definition of playable games.
Knowing nothing about you, I am not going to speculate, but I will say that I have encountered, AP's that have played off and on for decades that do not adjust well to the fact that it is not the 1970's or 1980's or even 1990's, when they had access to really good games. These folks are really frustrated with today's games and wouldn't find games that I play acceptable. As a matter of fact, in the absence of a time machine, they aren't going to find anything to their liking.
I, on the other hand, having only played the game for a decade, grew up playing these conditions and actually grew up playing the worst of these conditions, Atlantic City, 8 deck games, with 2 decks cut off and no surrender.So 6 deck games with surrender and a deck or less cut off are a major upgrade to me and very playable.
And one more thing about Vegas, which I have said a hundred times. It isn't really about the quality of games. There are far better games other locations. Vegas is about quantity of games. There are many, many mediocre, what I consider playable games to bounce around playing. And that means you can exit early, escaping many negative counts and just move on to the next game.
But, as I said, I suspect we have very different definitions of playable games.
