    antony: CVB software

hi, I was trying to practice the running count drills with the CVB software but regardless to the outcome the answer provided by CVB always gives 0 value. Doesn't the running count for 2-6 suppose to be add 1 and 10 to A to be minus 1 instead of 0? Or am I making a mistake?

That is one of many strategies. You must select one of them. From the main menu select Strategies then Plaiyng Strategy (Simple.)

The User might be confused by the fact that if you select Counting Drills via the Start, Programs, Casino Verite, CVDrills path, you don't get a menu item anywhere to select a Strategy, so it defaults to what you last selected, or didn't select, in the main CV Blackjack program.

Strange, but I pointed this very thing out to Norm just the other day. His answer was that most people just want to play the game and don't go first to the drills. I then commented that, apparently, I wasn't "most people," since I had gone straight to the drill, only to be stymied by how to input the tag values of the count I wanted to "practice."

For the record, I'd prefer to have the counting drill as a stand-alone, where the tag values are input on that very screen.

    Norm Wattenberger: Strategy selection

Very few people use more than one count. Earlier versions of CV allowed selecting strategies from the drills. However, V3 allows so many more strategy options I decided that strategy selection should be centralized.

I understand, and understand why. It's just a design choice.

But perhaps just a note in the Drill section to remind the User how to determine the Strategy, would help?

The drills are great, of course.

I could not agree with you more. I always go straight to the drill screens, practice count/discard drills and THEN practice at the tables.I find this to be the ideal way to prepare for 30 mins or so before actual casino play.
All said and done I did not think that Norm could improve cvbj. I was very wrong!

I've only recently loaded the updated version and I may be missing the point. I believe that when you go directly to the drills the first screen is still the option to select a player. If one player was 6D S17 and one player was DD H17 then aren't the flashcard drills using the appropriate strategies? Wouldn't the same be true of counting drills if one player used Zen and one used AOII?

I also assumed that if you set of sequence of drills that the same would apply and that graphs tracking your rating would reflect both strategies or counts.

This may not be what you and Don are getting at, but I'm wondering if I've misunderstood how the new version is working.

Norm Wattenberger: Yes it does work that way

But, the Flashcard drills contain a shortcut to change the strategy anyway in case you want to change the rules or indexes. I didn't bother putting a shortcut on the counting and deck estimation drills because almost no one uses more than one count. If someone does, yes they can use your method.

It was my intent to remove options in V3 that I thought superfluous because I added many new options and was afraid the number would become overwhelming. This is also why I added the ability to specify a level of expertise that dims out options not likely to be used by beginners. Perhaps that feature should be extended to the drills.
