    1st base: Back Counting

Looking for advice on cover for wonging into a table. How does one not appear obvious while standing behind a 6 deck shoe table for what seems like forever? May be paranoid but I think I caught the pit keeping an eye on me. The cover I was attempting was to pay attention to the CSM table next door, with an occasional clandestine glance (or maybe not so clandestine) at the target table to keep the count. Didn't help that I couldn't buy a positive count and did nothing but stand behind players the whole day. Thanks in advance, new at this backcounting thing.

During busy times especially with slow dealers it is sometimes possible to walk halfway around the pit and still make it back in time to see the next round...often times it is eaiser to wong out of low counts then wong into high counts although this hurts your EV. I also feel very exposed at certian casinos standing around back counting when there are not a lot of ploppies standing around but at other times you can just stand there like a statue and not get any heat....every situation is different...or throw a few bucks on the roulette table from time to time while seemingly concentrating on it instead of the BJ table next to it. I recommend that you read the first chapter of BJA2. Or, if you don't have the book, wait a month or so and get BJA3.

Yeh this is a problem. Adopt a mood. For example, I sometimes try to look like I'm waiting for someone. Glances at my watch followed by grimaces. Looking in the direction of the elevators. When you do sit, don't look too anxious. Look a bit furtive still glancing toward the elevators.

It's like any act. I don't know how much this helps. But, it gets me out of the mood of back-counting. And good PBs, like any salesmen, read moods. They also like to peg someone into a category quickly. Your act must allow them to peg you into a non-threatening category.

If you spend a lot of time back-counting, spend some time staring at the craps tables too.

Thanks a bunch to all for the suggestions. Am sort of embarrassed that I don't own BJA2, but have already ordered and am patiently waiting for BJA3.(well, trying to be patient)

Funny thing happened this weekend. Moved around so much I apparently stood right behind the same guy at 3 different tables, and ran into him in the bathroom also. Didn't notice until he brought it to my attention and asked me if I was following him. Good thing he had a sense of humor.

See, I love that. I like to back count and like you, many times feel "exposed" standing around.

If I am lucky enough to run into a guy like this, I will ask if I am bothering them at all and do they mind if I watch. Many times you can engage them in light conversation, watching their play, commenting generically (ooh, great draw .. ohhh, tough bust .. ) and then decide to make a "bet or two" at the appropriate time.

Everybody can't be worked like this, but some can.

That book sounds familiar, who wrote that?

I don't know if this is at all helpful.

But you may want to practice learning to count through mirror reflections.

I know one guy who only wongs shoes using this method. And he only does it through the mirrors. So whatever table he is standing behind, is NOT the one he is counting down.

I tried it, but I couldn't do it effectively. I'm not that clever. I'm probably the least smartest person in this room. But, others in here are very capable of doing it and i'm sure some do and they will be happy to advise you.

To date my friend has never been caught doing it. So give it a shot.

If you can't do it, then you're no worse off then before you tried.

    Good luck,

    Hollywood
