    illsur5: Simple question, simple answer?

A civilian next to me asked me where the house gets the edge at blackjack because she presumes
" we all get the cards ". I found myself a tad dumbfounded when I attempted to answer her question and my sentences came out as babbles. Can you guys club me over the head and remind me again! Come to think of it I've always kind of wondered this myself.
    Thank you

    ET Fan: Double bust rule

I had to explain this to my niece, recently. Her husband has a gambling problem. "But he's REAL GOOD! He counts cards, and he wins ALL THE TIME when he plays with his friends! He just has BAD LUCK in the casino. (sob)" I asked her what books he's read about blackjack. "Oh, he never read any books, or anything like that!"

"Well," I explained, "you've gotta understand that the game in the casinos is different from the home game. "What do you mean?" "Well, the casino always gets to be the dealer." "So??" "Well, you know when you hit your hand and bust, how the dealer takes your money away?" "Yeah?" "OK, suppose HE busts later on, when he plays HIS hand, he doesn't give you your money back, does he!?" "Nooooo?" Well, there's no way around that!" (Sharp intake of breath) "I KNEW IT!" ;-)

OTOH, I tried to explain this to her dad (my brother), once, who has played cards all his life, and he still doesn't accept my explanation.

Its all in the rules that they set in that casino. For instances lets say there was single deck game,S17,DA2,DAS and early surrender then you would have a massive .77% advantage over the house playing only basic strategy. They get there advantage by limiting these rules to give the house an average advantage of .5%

The player must hit first, and if he busts, he loses whether or not the dealer busts. That's where the house advantage comes from.

The advantage is so large, the casinos give some of it back in bonuses the dealer doesn't get, such as 3:2 on BJ, double downs and splits.
