aria_hmm: why is single deck advertised in casino

was wondering why most casinos in vegas have these big table signs on a pole touting SINGLE DECK. ideally, single deck is supposed to be the best for players...after all it all started with single deck, although i hear a lot of neophytes ask dealers "where's the 'regular' bj?" when approaching a pitch game.

so, its seems odd that casinos would advertise so prominently that they have a whopping 1 or 2 tables of single deck with a big sign. (most single deck sucks anyway nowadays with rules and pene.)

    why?

There are may oldtimers who still frequent Las Vegas and who remember when that's all you had for blackjack games. To them, it's nostalgic to play single deck. In addition, some players enjoy holding the cards and scraping the felt, flipping over naturals, etc.

So, casinos continue to market to this clientele. Of course, they hope that they're stupid enough to overlook the fact that SD is now 6:5 and isn't even a real blackjack game. And, sadly, most of them are stupid enough!

The 6:5 "hybrid" game should not be allowed to be called Blackjack. In a world were patents and all others things do exist to protect trademarks, it's a shame that casinos could ever advertise this as Blackjack.

Its not called "blackjack" its called "single deck blackjack".
I think the latter name was chosen, because I think by law
they can't call it blackjack. But I could be wrong. It is
    however (purposely) deceptive

The old Single Deck with the 3:2 BJ payment has always been called "Single Deck Blackjack" and advertised using the same name.

If the game of blackjack could only be a certain set of rules with a certain number of decks, there'd be a new name each time the slightest change was made. But the basic tenet that you want to get a blackjack, or as close to 21 as possible, remains the same regardless of those other differences.

Hell, it shouldn't even be called blackjack. The game is 21, from the French Vingt-et-Un, and the rules were slightly different back then, too. (It's generally believed that Vingt-et-Un was derived from a very old French game called The Farm, but I know nothing of that game or if this is still believed to be true.) By the way, "blackjack" started off as a _bonus_ to Vingt-et-Un. I don't know if it was an actual side bet, but there was a bonus payout if your 21 was the result of the ace of spades and either of the black jacks.

Point is, why get picky about the name? Get picky about the rules you play, get picky about your counting skills, get picky about your camouflage. Getting worked up over the name just isn't worth it.

    Just my $.02!

You are wrong. Blackjack is not copyrighted therefore the term can be used in any perversion of the game, unless Gaming rules otherwise for that particular jurisdiction.

I do agree that it is purposely deceptive.

According to John Scarne "Black Jack" first appeared as a bank game in Evansville, Indiana in 1910 (it was a private game before that). The bonus you mention first appeared in 1912 and was not a side bet. It paid 10:1. This side bet was called "black jack" whereas the game was called "21". And a 21 in your first two cards paid 3:2. How the game came to be referred to by the bonus is probably lost to history.
