21player: old school binions horeshoe--why cant it be like it was?

i was reading over some stuff about how good binion's was before the sister ran in into the ground, and started reflecting upon the good ole days there. as far as bj, and real gambling ambience and SERVICE, and hustle and bustle goes, there was no other, and still is nothing like it in vegas to my opinion. the game was great, the tolerance even better. so, why are these casinos nowadays running bj into the ground with their heat and "Guido-like" critters staring you down and buggin you for players cards? makes me wanna drink!

i wish someone had the gall (and cash) to run a full front page ad in every newspaper (do people read newspapers anymore?) in the country letting the public know just how bad bj conditions are nowadays in vegas and reno even, and how the casinos of today offer horrible 6;5 even on 8 decks (at imp. palace), and whats with all harrahs properties with their NDAS? and horrible penetr...

an article that would explain in layman's terms how bj can be beaten, and everything the casinos do to try to ensure it wont. how they want Billy Bob to come to town, make a bet, play with no clue whatsoever, and hopefully (probably) lose. And how they bug you 24/7 about players cards...blah blah--what a scam those are!---they're worse than credit cards! who cares about "free" comps? i want MONEY!

maybe this would cause a casinos to return to a game that is playable AND FUN. they want you to try to win, and if you have half a brain, they dont want you to play--win OR lose. what a crock!

why cant it be how it was? will it ever?

The casinos used to run by mobsters; now they're run by accountants. Since I don't see the mobsters regaining control any time soon, it is unlikely that conditions will ever be "the way they were."

Other things have changed as well. It used to be that people went to Las Vegas to gamble. Now, there is a casino within an hour or so drive of nearly every metropolitan area, so people go to Las Vegas for other reasons

If they go at all. Las Vegas used to be recession-proof. Been there lately?

The gambling itself has changed as well. Casinos used to be filled with blackjack and craps tables, slot machines were an afterthought. Now the big money is in slots, table games are the afterthought. Players clubs are structured around slot players, not table game players.

Of course, the old days had their downside as well. Cheating was more common, and while the old 'Shoe may have been tolerant of AP's, players who exceeded that tolerance were dealt with rather harshly.

Franz Joseph: "Guido-like" is an insult to Italian-Americans

Neither of the following statements is true:

    1. Most hoods are Italian.
    2. Most Italians are hoods.

WRX: It's doubtful that Binion's can be ANYTHING...

...other than an empty building, very soon. Management are afraid of their own shadows. Limits all dropped to $500, with little paper signs taped over the electronic displays. No $100 chips on the blackjack tables. No $500 chips on the crap tables. Would losing $25,000 on a shift truly run them out of cash? Well, maybe so.

Otherwise, there's no visible evidence that they're putting any money into the place whatsoever. Dingy inside and out. Old, tired machines. Hotel closed down flat recently, rather than do any much-needed rehabilitation. The famous coffee shop closed down. Even the poker room is about dead.

I don't know that an old-style downtown operation would be a money maker. Just because a casino is attractive to APs doesn't mean it's attractive to a broad segment of the public, or a profitable business model. But I agree that the present management is utterly inept. They don't seem to have a clue as to how to craft a business plan. They're just doing what they do out of habit.

The trouble is, I don't know if even a marketing genius could make Binion's a good place to invest money at this point. Downtown clearly has considerable excess capacity, for the customer base that it now attracts. With the exceptions of the Golden Nugget, and maybe Main Street Station and the California Hotel, I doubt that ANYONE can be profitable until a few more competing properties close down flat. I'm betting Binion's will be the first.
