    Bettie: No smoking in Vegas

Well, almost. I'm happy to report that, despite the huge coffers of the franchise bars - and especially Terrible's - who pushed heavily for a "Yes on 4; No on 5," the more stringent of the two anti-smoking propositions passed ("No on 4; Yes on 5"). This does not mean that casinos will be smoke free, but all bars that serve food will be, as will be schools, daycare centers, grocery stores, all restaurants, shopping malls, etc.

There was a real danger of Question 4 passing at the expense of Question 5, but you have to question any anti-smoking measure SUPPORTED by the local bars! And while I didn't much care for the way that Question 5 was presented ("Won't somebody PLEASE think about the children?"), it worked, and so I'm pleased with the final outcome.

    Have a good day!

Sun Runner: being 'about the children'

I was in San Diego over Halloween and repeatedly heard this stretch of credulity ..

.. Bill Clinton, asking Californians to pass some ethanol fuel related legislation, to keep oil drilling off the coast.

'Do it for our children's health', Bill implored.

This time last year in my state we approved joining Powerball and giving the Native Americans Class II gambling 'for the children's education.'

Their shame truly knows no bounds.

I thought that every bar was required to serve some kind of food. Maybe Nevada has a different set of rules than other states.

No, there are many bars that do not serve food; there is no requirement. Most do, of course, to keep you there instead of leaving when you get hungry. I've lived in other states and have not heard of any law stating that bars MUST serve food (except in one case when any bars located on the second floor of a building had to serve food, but first-floor bars did not).

But of course, no state is required to adopt the exact same laws as everyone else. No other state but NV has legal prostitution, not all states are required to recognize gay marriage unions just because MA did it, etc.
