college kid: Survey for young women gamblers in Vegas

This is a survey for a casino management/marketing class. My team is doing ?young, female, winning gamblers in Vegas.? Yeah, what of it? (No, I don't have to meet you for it! Just the survey.) Anybody can take the survey, but it would really help if you are a local young Vegas woman. I?ve tailored it a lot to poker and blackjack stuff but feel free to add in anything you want afterwards. I need everything I can get!

Please assume ?and why?? or ?and why not?? is applied after every question, except the first two. (Yes, this means I want to know why for the 3rd question.)

    Age?

    Ethnicity?

    Religion?

A coin is flipped 3 times and comes up tails for all three. Is heads or tails more likely to appear on the next toss?

    Do you like Las Vegas?

    How often do you gamble?

Do you win when you gamble?

What is your game of choice?

Have you looked into other games?

Do you keep records of your gambling wins and losses?

What factors have contributed to your looking into more games or not, and what do you believe are the most significant differences between house games (player vs. house) and poker?

If you saw the dealer exposing cards being dealt to other players at a poker table, would you tell?

If you saw the dealer expose his hole card at blackjack, would you tell?

Do you like the casino environment?

Do you like and/or respect the gaming industry?

A coin is flipped 100 times and comes up tails for all 100. Is heads or tails more likely to appear on the next toss?

Do you have a positive expectation when you gamble?

Have you heard of and if so, what do you know about, the following people: Nick Dandalos, Julian Bruan, Johnny Moss, Kenny Uston, Steve Fezzik, Jeffery Ma, Michael Roxborough, Thomas Austin Preston, William Nelson Darnborough, Erich Weiss?

college kid: (yes, it's a serious survey)

I put this up on the 2+2 web forum too, and based on the responses there, I thought I'd tell you that this is a serious survey. I'm not trying to meet girls. Any help would be much appreacited!

    > Age?

    36

    > Ethnicity?

    Mixed

    > Religion?

Agnostic, because I have not seen enough convincing evidence either way.

    > A coin is flipped 3 times and comes up tails for all
    > three. Is heads or tails more likely to appear on the
    > next toss?

Tails, because there is a slight chance that the coin is not properly balanced. Also you did not list the correct answer as an option if the coin is truly balanced.

    > Do you like Las Vegas?

No. It is a leach that survives by sucking the lifeblood out of hard working people.

    > How often do you gamble?

Rarely (just sportsbetting during football season). I play games of chance almost every day, but I do not consider it gambling unless I am playing without a known positive expectation.

    > Do you win when you gamble?

    Sometimes, usually not.

    > What is your game of choice?

Gambling = Football bets. Non-Gambling = Blackjack and Poker.

    > Have you looked into other games?

Yes, I have looked at every game I have ever seen offered in a casino or elsewhere.

    > Do you keep records of your gambling wins and losses?

Yes. I keep 3 sets of detailed records. One for myself, one for my wife, and one for the IRS.

    > What factors have contributed to your looking into
    > more games or not, and what do you believe are the
    > most significant differences between house games
    > (player vs. house) and poker?

I look into every game I find out about. I look further if it seems that there may be a way to gain a positive edge. House games are challenging because you are trying to convince the house that you do not know how to play and are not a threat. Poker is challenging because you must constantly adapt your strategy based on your opponent, vs a fixed strategy in house games (for the most part).

    > If you saw the dealer exposing cards being dealt to
    > other players at a poker table, would you tell?

Would I tell whom, exactly? The answer is No, I would not tell anyone. Telling other poker players would be negative EV, telling a partner at the table would be illegal.

    > If you saw the dealer expose his hole card at
    > blackjack, would you tell?

I might tell my partner at the table (this is not illegal, as established by case law). I would tell no one else and I would also make sure that I did not tip the dealer.

    > Do you like the casino environment?

No. It is boring and full of depressing, irritating people.

    > Do you like and/or respect the gaming industry?

No. Reasons too numerous to list. The industry is a leech on society and adds no value. It preys on the weakest and most vulnerable.

    > A coin is flipped 100 times and comes up tails for all
    > 100. Is heads or tails more likely to appear on the
    > next toss?

Tails. Much more likely that you are dealing with a biased coin than in your previous example. Are you sure this coin does not have 2 tails? Either that, or you are dealing with a scam artist. The probability of a balanced coin coming up tails 100 times in a row is well under 1%. If I was flipping and got this result, then I would bet my house on an unbalanced coin / tails.

    > Do you have a positive expectation when you gamble?

No. By my definition, gambling means placing a wager WITHOUT a known positive expectation. I do have a positive expectation on almost all of my wagers.

    > Have you heard of and if so, what do you know about,
    > the following people: Nick Dandalos, Julian Bruan,
    > Johnny Moss, Kenny Uston, Steve Fezzik, Jeffery Ma,
    > Michael Roxborough, Thomas Austin Preston, William
    > Nelson Darnborough, Erich Weiss?

Johnny Moss - Legendary poker player. Cheated during games in his early career. Running mate of Doyle Brunson back in the day. Convicted child molestor.

Kenny Uston - Former President of the Pacific Stock Exchange, Legendary BJ player, famous for creating sophisticated BJ teams and popularizing the "big player" approach, Experimented with the use of computers before they were made illegal, successfully challenged the right of AC casinos to bar skilled players, died under mysterious circumstances in a Paris hotel room. Legendary for his lack of self discipline in his personal life (drugs, women, etc, etc)

Steve Fezzik - Green Chip member on BJ21, turned sports handicapper. Had good success last season, but couldn't get anything right this year. Cost me over $1K with his f$%#king idiodically wrong football picks. I hear that he is a great guy.

Julian Braun - BJ author and theorist. One of the pioneers of card counting.

BTW, I would be shocked if any young female knows any of these people.

    college kid: thank you!!!!!

You may not be exactly what I'm looking for, but thank you for taking it seriously and giving me something to go with here. Like I said, I'll take what I can get! Interesting responses; I like them. I am curious about your answer to the question about a coin coming up tails 3 times. Even if it is a fair and real coin, do you think that it will land upright? I've read a lot about the bias of flipping a coin. Any thoughts on that?

Hey now! I've apparently heard of even more of these people than you have, including the fact that Uston wrote dozens of books on using computers (kaypro, compaq, adam, etc.) and beating video games, including one specifically on pac-man. I saw a half-dozen of these on a bookstore shelf once, but didn't buy them. By the time I came home and did a little research and figured out that they were written by THE Uston and went back to the store, they were all gone. I really wanted that pac-man one, too!

Good luck, college kid, but AP boards aren't the place to find women to do this survey. Try more general boards on LV, like the one at LVadvisor.com.

"Hey now! I've apparently heard of even more of these people than you have"

Bettie - You are an exception to the rule. I should have said that I would be shocked if he found more than 1-2 young women who had heard of these people.

I think that a sample size of 3 is way too small to prove anything. I'm not sure of the probability that a fair coin will land on the same side 3 times in a row, but it is probably 25% (first toss sets the side, 50% chance for toss 2 multiplied by 50% chance for toss 3). In other words, you will get the same side for 3 straight tosses about 1 in every 4 tries. Nothing that would cause me to suspect a biased coin, but it does point to a slight probability there.

There is also the possibility that the coin will land on its edge and also that the coin will not come back down for whatever reason. These are both low probability events under most circumstances.

I'd bet there isn't one person in 1,000 who knows Houdini's real name. Moreover, exactly what does it have to do with a gambling survey?
