SOTSOG: More "fair and balanced" reporting?

    Later from the LVRJ:

Some concertgoers took issue with the Aladdin's accounts of angry patrons tearing down posters and throwing drink cups.

"I was so stunned to read in the newspaper that anyone had a negative reaction," said KLAS-TV, Channel 8, news anchor Paula Francis. "Everyone who was leaving when I was leaving was just thrilled. They thought it was a good concert."

At the end of an hour's worth of singing, "she got a standing ovation, then she came out and did the (`Desperado') encore," Francis said. "There were loud boos and there was quite a bit of applause. But everyone calmed down right away and seemed to enjoy the rest of the encore."

Other concertgoers said the audience was unruly and hard-drinking from the beginning. Some expected a classic rock hits revue and were confused by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performance of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" that opened the show.

During the concert, Ronstadt criticized the hotel's marketing, disputing signage that promised a greatest hits revue. (Print ads said, "Linda Ronstadt and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra plus her band, performing her `greatest rock hits' and the great American standards.")

    >>>>>

Sounds like both parties wanted out of this contract? Since all the shock and outrage seems to have come from Aladdan employees and they escorted her off the property -- as Paul Harvey would say -- "and now for the rest of the story ..."

Yup. Sounds like 'Audience Enjoys Show' to me. I guess the Aladdin has the right to evict her, but shame on them for lying about the reason.

I'll be happy to take further political jibber-jabber off-line. For now, let's get back to gamblin', drinkin', and skanky hos. Woo! Vegas!

I talked to someone who was at the show, and he said that there were a lot of jeers and people leaving around the area he was in. Maybe little miss reporter was sitting in an area reserved for the more privileged, and they didn't want to make a scene. The schlup I talked to said that he was pissed, but liked Linda Ronstadt enough to stay, though there were a lot of people walking out in front of him.

It all depends on the angle. It's possible that there was a difference of opinion between the prime seats and the balcony.

Parker: A tale of two cities

I don't know exactly what happened at the Aladdin show - I wasn't there. The following evening, Ronstadt played San Diego. I wasn't there either, but today I talked to someone who was.

First, a little background. The San Diego show was at Humphrey's Concerts By the Bay. This intimate little jewel of an outdoor venue is located right on San Diego Bay. If there is a better place on earth to hear live music, I haven't found it (I saw Etta James there on Friday night - awesome show). Humphrey's has a long reputation for booking an eclectic mix of acts.

In addition, the San Diego Union-Tribune carried an in-depth interview with Ronstadt in Thursday's edition. In it, she expressed discomfort with the "rock star" phase of her career, and made it clear that that would be a relatively small part of her show.

And of course, San Diego has a well-earned reputation for being "laid-back."

Anyway, my friend tells me that the show was well received. She again dedicated her encore to Michael Moore, and was greeted with a 50/50 mix of cheers and boos. However, it was quickly forgotten once the song started, and the show ended on a pleasant enough note.

My point? To quote Counselor Harmann in The Matrix Reloaded, "No point. Old men like me don't bother with making points. There's no point."

However, I think my subject line has potential. :-)

    Sun Runner: The point

it's all wrapped up in your pre-disposed bias.'

    Case in 'point.'

I go home Tuesday night to eat dinner with the in-laws. My father in law, a conservative of the highest order -says .. "SO, you see where that Linda Ronstadt got thrown out of that place in Nevada. Serves her right you know, I'm glad they did it, the whole place walked out on her, the bitc ......"

    You get the idea.

"She lost her job" he shouts. I swear he said that.

Now, you all know how I feel about Ms Ronstadt and her actions .. but now, me, being the hater of all sweeping generalizations (I like to think my opinions are thourghly vetted and well thought out!) I start taking up for her!!

"Yes, but that place throws everybody out .."
"No, EVERYBODY didn't walk out, only about 20% as well as I can tell .."
"And by the way, it was YOUR people that acted like children throwing drinks and tearing the place up (was that a sweeping generalization -no, I don't think so)."
"She didn't lose anything; she was singing before she got there and she was singing somewherelse the next night."

Fact is .. SOTSOG probably got it right, but I still don't like her pinko commie elitist attitude ...

Parker .. you are so right .. 'Humphries By The Bay' is the best place on the planet for a night of just soaking up life and taking it easy.

Norm Wattenberger: Shortest barring in history

Kind of silly for a hotel manager to say "you will never work here again!!" when you work for a bankrupt casino that's about to change hands The probable new owners of the Aladdin say:

"We respect artists' creativity and support their rights to express themselves," says Earl. "We were very sorry to hear about the unfortunate circumstances of this past Saturday night and want to make it clear that Planet Hollywood has never, in our 13 year history, restricted any artists' right to free speech and we will continue with that policy once we take ownership."

    Bettie: Linda gets another walk-out

Geez, Linda - take a break, already! She sold out a show of 1700 in Wente Vineyards (even after about 20 tickets were returned after the LV gig), but about 100 people walked out at the end again.

Bettie: Ronstadt and Moore to Duet

From the "Norm!" column in today's LVRJ:

It's official: The duo of Linda Ronstadt and "Fahrenheit 9/11" filmmaker Michael Moore will sing "America the Beautiful" at Planet Hollywood this fall, after the takeover of the Aladdin.

That's the word from my Left Coast spies, and I do mean "left."

Planet Hollywood chief Robert Earl invited the two to perform after the Aladdin's eviction of Ronstadt on Saturday. The dismissal followed her show, during which she criticized the casino and politicized the event by dedicating her encore song "Desperado" to Moore.

Ronstadt told the Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen, her hometown newspaper, that many of her fellow entertainers have been supportive.

"Irving Azoff, who is the Eagles' manager, immediately pulled all his acts from the Aladdin," she said. "I've had phone calls and messages from all over. Elton John sent me flowers last night. Keith Richards, Sting, the list goes on and on of people pouring in support."
