Battery: Bettie - Any interesting casino flood stories? *NM*
-
Bettie: Personally, not really.
Nope! Thank goodness. Most of the floods were in the Northwest part of town, and I live pretty much opposite from there. I was actually near the Strip the entire time, and it didn't do much more than get a little flooded in a few parts of the street.
The paper was full of stories of helicopter rescues, people losing their cars, trees uprooted, highways closing, etc. They're still dealing with debris and still waters up there, according to the news.
It's actually pretty strange living in this little Valley. The temperature from the West to the East side of town often varies by 5 degrees, and the West side gets all kinds of wacky weather. Storms and snow and clouds from Cali will just make it to the mountains and then stop, but then the West gets some residual snow or rain. Not long after I moved here, the whole valley developed a reddish haze to it. According to the news, it was the effects of a sandstorm - in the Gobi Desert! It had travelled halfway around the world, over a major ocean, and then stopped in our valley because we didn't have enough wind to push it out over the other side of the mountains. We had the same problems during the fires in Cali, too. You could see the black smoke come over the Mt. Charleston range and then just spread over the valley. We have a lot of hazardous air days, where they'll tell the elderly and children and people with breathing problems to stay indoors because of it.
Anyway, I should probably get back to work. Viktor doesn't pay me to sit here and look cute!

And the I-15 freeway has been re-opened at Barstow! I guess I will be able to make my trip to Vegas this weekend after all!

Bettie: Some funny LV flood jokes
From today's R-J:
Late-night talk-show hosts saturate audiences with flood jokes
Late-night TV talk-show hosts unleashed a deluge of one-liners about the Las Vegas flooding.
Jimmy Kimmel of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and CBS' Craig Kilborn of "The Late Late Show" had their comedic take, of course.
Kilborn led his "In the News" segment with flood footage and added, "The governor of Nevada issued a statement reading, `Remain calm and continue to gamble away your life savings. Repeat: Continue to gamble away your life savings.' "
He added, "Experts say the flooding started as a botched attempt to water down the drinks at the Golden Nugget."
Kilborn said that instead of sandbags, emergency workers used old ladies weighed down by nickels.
The flood damage was so extensive, he added, "It caused a total blackout in the New York-New York."
Kimmel showed video of the dramatic rescues and hyped what he called some "unbelievable footage."
Then he showed archival footage of people playing slot machines. But the video was digitally altered to show the slot players up to their necks in water.
