    Parker: Cheap eats downtown

    Sure, why not?

The first stop would be either of the snack bars in the Horseshoe. Great burgers, Horseshoe chili, and their famous beans & ham - a different type of bean each day of the week. Nothing on the menu is over $4.50.

The Horseshoe Deli has deli style sandwiches in the $5-$6 range. They advertise that their pastrami sandwich is the best in the world. I don't know about that, but it is pretty tasty.

Perhaps the most famous bargain downtown is the 99 cent shrimp cocktails at the Golden Gate. Yes, the shrimp are tiny, but it's all shrimp - not a few shrimp atop a bed of lettuce like some other "bargain" shrimp cocktails.

The Golden Gate deli offers other bargains as well - a jumbo Hebrew National hot dog for $1.95, deli sandwiches (great pastrami) in the $4 range, and daily specials. Enjoy the live piano music while you eat.

The Bay City Diner, also at the Golden Gate, has typical coffee shop fare at very reasonable prices, in a San Francisco dining car style setting. Southerners can get grits with the breakfasts here.

Trivia: The Golden Gate is the oldest hotel in Las Vegas, opening in 1906. The first telephone in Las Vegas was installed at the Golden Gate. The number was, of course, "1." But who did they call?

If you prefer a genuine Chicago style Vienna Beef hot dog, you can find one at the snack bar at the south end of the Plaza casino for $1.49.

Late night offers several specials. After 11:00 pm steak & eggs at the Las Vegas Club (Upper Deck restaurant) goes for $2.95.

If you'd rather have a full-blown New York strip steak dinner, complete with baked potato and salad, head on over to the basement coffee shop at the Horseshoe after 11:00 pm, and it is yours for $4.95.

Going a little more upscale, the Triple 7 Brewpub at Main St. Station has sandwich plates in the $7 range, and excellent microbrews. Non-drinkers should try the microbrewed root beer.

Hopefully others will chime in with their favorites. I know I have omitted a few.

Another take on some of the downtown bargains Parker mentioned, as well as some of the "values" elsewhere in Vegas:

    Bettie: Main Street Station

Try the Main Street Station for the best cheap dinner buffet anywhere in town. Dinner runs $9 or $10, and the buffet is attractive, clean, and has a wide variety of delicious food. I realize it's the most expensive compared to Parker's list, but it really is a great deal.

I always try to make it to the Fremont's Seafood buffet. I recall that it is on Sunday and I think Tuesday. I've always found it's fare competive with much more expensive seafood buffets on the strip. Also the Tony Roma's downtown offers an inexpensive prime rib with some of the hottest horsradish I've every tasted! Have fun. I'm counting down twenty days until my trip.

I love fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy. I can't remember the prices but I've enjoyed Binion's and even the Plaza's. I guess this proves that I am indeed a tasteless individual in a town filled with gourmet meals.
