    Kasey: Favorite Off-Strip Shows?

Planning another trip for this fall and I would like to see some shows other than the huge shows (e.g. Danny Gans, O!, etc.).

    What are your favorites?

Bettie: These suggestions could be fun

All of the smaller shows that I have seen have been comedians and singers who come in and out of town, really. Like Tom Jones - he puts on a great show and his voice is even more amazing in person (unlike the fast-fading Wayne Newton).

I understand that the Mac King comedy show (afternoons at Harrah's) is a real treat, and only about $15. Or just go to any of the many lounges around town (Caesar's and Bellagio have some great ones) and catch one of the local voices and enjoy some drinks.

We do that quite a bit, and it's nice to sit and relax in such a fun atmosphere and be entertained - by the crowd as well as the people on stage. Bellagio has Jimmy Hopper - he has a great voice and a lot of personality and does a lot of rock in his lounge act - Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen among others.

If you are willing to slum a bit - quite a bit - the SunDrops at the Plaza are a hoot. A band of - I don't know for sure - Filipinos sings country music with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. It sounds awful - and it is - but the small lounge area in front of the stage (it's out in the open by some bj tables) is ALWAYS packed, and we make it a point to stop by the stage to see if they're on whenever we're downtown. Sitting in the lounge is a two-drink minimum, but there's otherwise no charge.

The Las Vegas Convention and Tourism website has a feature where you can put in the dates and the type of entertainment you want to see, and it'll give you all sorts of information, from conventions to local park gatherings. Try the link below.

Kasey: Thanks, these are good suggestions

A lot of the shows we have enjoyed the most are the Tom Jones type shows. He was terrific!

Checking out the lounge bands is a great idea, too.

Have you seen the magician/comedian at the Nugget? I wondered if his show was any good.

The Amazing Johnathan, right? No, I haven't seen him - he seems a bit too childish, what with the fake blood and gore. That's just my perception, though. I have never heard anyone say they've been to that show, actually.

I took my family today to one of the best free shows available - The Birdman of Las Vegas at the Tropicana. Daily at 12:30 and 2:00 (there may be some day that he's "dark") he does a 15-minute show with various birds doing tricks involving props or singing or flying - whatever each bird's individual talent is. It's a lot of fun and I make it a point to take friends there. It's upstairs outside of the buffet - there's no special room; it takes place out side the bar right there. Go a few minutes early to get a seat, though we had a good view standing off to the side today.

Not a show, but still entertaining is the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. It's $15 ($11 if you have a NV id), and at the end there's a petting tank where you can pet small sharks, stingrays (they've had their stingers removed), and other animals. The tour itself is nice and they provide recorded tour guide thingies so you can get more information.

I have not seen him at the Nugget, but I saw his show at a local club a couple years ago, and I would highly reccommend it! It's a great combination of comedy and magic (70/30), and he's hilarious. At $35, a steal, go see him!

I have not see his show, which is why I did not jump in sooner. However, several people I know (and whose opinions I respect) have seen it, and they unanimously recommend it highly.

And indeed, $35 for an evening show is about As Good As It Gets in Las Vegas.

Does anyone have any experience with the Golden Nugget regarding getting a comp for this show?
