Parker: Laptop Travel Tips
While the site linked to below is aimed at musicians who carry laptops, nearly all of the advice is applicable to anyone who travels with a laptop.
I found the info on power setups for the various airlines to be especially interesting, although not applicable to my most frequent flight (the one hour trip from San Diego to Las Vegas).

bfbagain: Three handy tools for the traveling AP
1) The SanDisk USB Titanium Flash Drive

3) A web anonymizer browser service - Anonymizer.com is one of many out there, both free and with modest subscription costs

As technology continues it's trek towards increased convenience, personal privacy, by default, can easily become a casualty with great losses. So it's become more than just being a discriminating web surfer, if your quest for both knowledge and access should remain under the pervue of personal privacy.
The above three tools allow you to remain private, along with all your personal information, wherever you travel, and more importantly, from wherever you access the internet from.

I think those new U3 Smart-capable Cruzer Titanium and Cruzer Micro drives are due in March/April. I've been hanging out for one.

AutomaticMonkey: A few more
1. Zone Alarm firewall from Zone Labs. Even the free version gives you quite good protection from malware and unauthorized access to your computer through unsecured networks.
2. An Ethernet cable. Cheap enough, but sometimes you will check into a hotel with wired high speed access and they don't have an Ethernet cable you can borrow.
3. 110V inverter. Ah, the joys of sitting in your car a few miles from a casino in a strange place analyzing a game, shuffle, or sidebet you just saw on your PC! You can get a 12VDC to 110VAC inverter for about $20 and that's usually cheaper than a 12V adapter for your laptop.
Never put your laptop in checked luggage, and never let it be visible in your parked car or through a window into your motel room. Some hotel room safes were designed to hold a standard sized laptop.
Also, if you are a guy who "wardrives"- parking outside industrial parks or other places looking for unsecured wireless access, be aware that the police have been informed that those who traffic in kiddie porn and do other illegal activities online will use this method to cover their tracks. So don't park behind buildings at night using your laptop unless you are willing to risk being handled by the cops and having your computer inspected.
