I've studied this game a fair bit.

Frank Scoblete explains the use of Hi Lo as an unbalanced count in his book Armada Strategies for Spanish 21 (much like KO is for Blackjack).

There is some dispute about the accuracy of the basic strategy for Spanish 21 in his book. Additional information (including strategy tables)can be found at:

Still, the book is worth reading. It is full of sound advice. You will find that card counting at Spanish 21 will yield nowhere near the benefits of card counting in Blackjack. The removal of tens really kills the game, even after the bonuses and extra playing options are considered. It's difficult to say if the game can ever be beaten in the real world because the winning opportunities occur so infrequently and, because a large bet spread is required, you could find yourself in a real hole and have to wait a long time for the opportunity to make a comeback. Then if you lose that run, it's another long wait. Naturals, theoretically, are few and far between, and this is one of the major sources of winnings for a blackjack player.

Still, Spanish 21 could be a useful game for cover to deflect suspicion from you as a card counting Blackjack player. This is why I've learned how to play this game. It's quite an interesting game to actually play because you have more options available. And, like any game, you can get lucky.

But it can be bankroll killer, so be careful!
