What, exactly, does it mean to "rename" the files. Someone mentioned winsock at the very beginning, so I'm intrigued that this might be the answer.

Just delete the winsock.dll file and then reinstall AOL. zg

You have a file named the.fil rename it to theOLD.fil.
That way if it is the problem, i.e., the system automatically regenerates a new, one you are in business. If not, then rename the file 'theOLD.fil' back to the original 'the.fil'

Don Schlesinger: You won't believe this!
Encouraged by the hope you guys were giving us, my son turned on his computer this morning, ready to implement your plan, and . . . everything was working perfectly!
As if by magic, Internet restored, AOL restored, as if nothing had ever happened!
Computers: You GOTTA hate them!!! :-)
I want to thank all of you who took the time to propose suggestions. Of course, the problem is, since we didn't to anything to "break" this, and we really didn't do anything to "fix" this either, that doesn't leave us much smarter for when, inevitably, it happens again.

I would definitely suspect the signal strength and or your splitter. Sounds like the exact problem I had with my system. I cured mine with a system amplifier supplied by the cable company. The problem is very illusive and even the cable techs have a hard time isolating this type of problem. Have they measured your signal at the splitter??? If not, I would ask them to complete this test to avoid future problems.
I am really gaining a lot of knowledge from your posts and hope to see you continue posting. Even though I don't have a lot to say (I am a listener) I read every post everyday.

I will call the company if this should ever happen again. They tested the signal before the tech installed the hardware, initially, but that doesn't mean something didn't go wrong since then.
Thanks for your suggestions and your kind words.
