It is also worth mentioning that StarOffice comes bundled with most of the major Linux distributions - Redhat, SuSE, Slackware, etc. I have been using StarOffice for sometime and am quite pleased with it.
I was not familiar with OpenOffice, so I immediately downloaded it. Like StarOffice, it is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac, as well as a few more exotic OS's, such as Solaris.
The Linux version came in a 67 MB tarball that took a little over 7 minutes to download (cable modem). After untarring in the usual fashion, the setup command produced a graphical installation interface that was a snap to follow. It integrated itself seamlessly into the KDE desktop. Total install took about 5 minutes.
So far, I've had a chance to play with the word processor, which actually bears more than a casual resemblance to StarOffice. It handles Microsoft Word documents with aplomb, and has all the features of an industrial-strength word processor.
I took a very quick look at Calc, the spreadsheet tool. I was able to open Dunbar's Risk Analyser from bjmath.com (an Excel spreadsheet), but when I tried to open the index generator from bjmath, it told me that it was password-protected. I'll have to play with this some more.
