    Bettie: Miscellaneous Casino News

Of course, as Wildcard predicted, Mississippi legislators are predicting that the laws requiring the gambling aspects of casinos (as opposed to the hotels and restaurants, which are on land) will be changed to allow land-based casinos, at least in a limited aspect (keeping them only in areas that currently have casinos, and not allowing growth inland).

Ameristar has reopened it's Vickburg casino and will pay employees for time lost. Casino Rouge has re-opened, as well ? no news on employee payments.

Harrah's is trying to re-open some of their damaged hotels for use as housing for displaced employees. Their 60,000 employees will continue to be paid for up to 90 days. No word yet on how the hurricane will affect their bank statement, and potentially disrupt or at least delay any planned renovations taking place in LV.

IGT lost two of it's three Gulf Coast-area offices, both are completely destroyed. However, their sales will likely get a boost since thousands of machines (estimated at 25,000) will need to be replaced in the coming months.

how much will the sale of 25,000 machines add to IGT's earnings? How many machines do they sell per year?

    Bettie: Found an answer

In 2004, IGT sold 159,200 units worldwide. 25,000 machines is about 15% of that.

Saboteur: Do they make the machines, or just sell them?

It could take a while before they have that many available.

Most of the ones that haven't already been carried off might be refurbishable, I'd guess.

Well, they're IGT-brand machines, but that doesn't mean that they don't contract out the actual construction. In fact, our old warehouse was right next to a slot manufacturer, though I don't know what machines they built. You can get company info at www.IGT.com, which is where I got the numbers above (off their year-end fiscal report). Of course, they'll have some time to build what they need since many of these casinos aren't going to be opening anytime soon.

if youre thinking along these lines, perhaps look at SHFL and WMS.
