Battery: Planning a trip to Reno?

I was for the week of July 10 until I checked into it. (I am a huge baseball fan and that is during the All-Star break.)

The cheaper fares on Southwest from both Tucson and Phoenix are mostly gone.

The Atlantis Casino web site says call for room rates. I did and was told there is a huge convention in town and their only available rooms are in the motor lodge.

I haven't been to Las Vegas since the Horseshoe went under. Maybe I'll have to reconsider.

You raise a good point. I am also thinking about visiting Northern Nevada this summer...never been there...

With Vegas, the general wisdom is that during the crowds are thinnest (and the room rates lowest) for weekdays during two periods:

    1. summer months when the temperature is up (late July and most of August)

    2. December-3rd week until Christmas, (after the Rodeo finishes.)

But...as for Reno/Lake Tahoe...I don't know. Does anyone know the similar general rule as for lowest room rates?

Reno is not a major tourist attraction like Vegas, so it is not as seasonal. Summer is a good time to visit, except for the first week in August, when they have a huge event called "Hot August Nights," during which everything is sold out months in advance.

I generally avoid winter, because, well, it's winter. Reno is far enough north and at enough elevation that they get nasty stuff like snow in the winter. OTOH, if you don't mind this sort of thing, rates are generally cheap.

Tahoe tends to fill up with skiiers in the winter, but this usually does not extend to Reno, since driving up and down the mountain in the winter can be a challenge, to say the least.

Reno is a much smaller town than Las Vegas, so any large convention will fill things up. Reno is very big on bowling (there is a huge bowling center downtown), and hosts bowling events several times a year. These should be avoided.

I'd guess you are always going to find low room rates in Reno unless it is a holiday weekend or, in this case, when a convention is in town.

I highly recommend the Atlantis mostly because of their pretty good single deck game. Unlike the downtown Reno casinos, you can double on any first two cards.

I always pay extra for a concierge room. It is well worth it. Besides they actually heat their pool which most of the places in Vegas only claim to do. My experience has shown the comps to be quite good too.

Another nice thing about Reno is all of the larger casinos provide airport pickup and return.
I'm going to be there in just over a week and want to visit the Nugget in Sparks. I may try to use the Atlantis van to get to the airport and then wait just a few minutes to get to Sparks courtesy of the Nugget.

The Peppermill is within walking distance of the Atlantis. A number of posters have said you have to expect a little more heat there but I've never had a problem.

Of course DA2 is better, but the D10-11 games found downtown are quite playable if you can find RO7 or better pen, which is usually not too hard to do. I actually had a dealer at one of the downtown joints a few years ago who would shuffle whenever I asked him to.

I wholeheartedly agree that the Atlantis is a class act. They also have an excellent mailing program. I get more comp offers in the mail from Atlantis than any other casino in Reno.

I'd recommend renting a car anyway. One nice thing about Reno is that the rental cars are right across the street from the airport terminal - no shuttle to mess with. The casinos offer the shuttles for a reason -- they know that without a rental car, you are pretty much stuck at the casino, especially in the winter.

    I have. :-)

Reno can be busy during the large events. I think the biggest is the Reno Air Races. The Rodeo is another major one. Reno can be deserted in December before Christmas. October to Noverber can be slow.

If you plan to play downtown only, a rental car is not needed as everything is close. But if you want to leave downtown, your own wheels are a good bet.

Reno is hurting these days. There are less tourists to keep it alive, less decent casinos, and the games have become worse. But it is still worth a visit, as the skeleton of its former self can still be seen.

Very true. IMO all the California indian casinos are killing Reno (and Tahoe).

Does the slump in the Northern California economy also play a factor there? Generally, the south of the state has been in better shape economically since the dot com bust. I imagine that Reno draws more from San Fran/Oakland/Sac while Las Vegas draws from LA/Orange Count/San Diego...

Thanks for the added input. The air races, rodeo, Hot August Nights & Bowling...gee there are a few things other than casinos there.
