    Wildcard: for the Tunica fans...

this is perhaps the best website you'll find. If you're "new" to the Tunica gaming area, I highly recommend you print a copy of the map. The venues are separated by a couple of miles and in clusters...you can easily get lost in those old cotton fields!

    Mr. Lucky: Dumb Tunica question.

Why is it that Tunica is so unknown nationally as a gaming destination? Everybody has heard of Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Yet, Tunica is bigger than all of them, and very few people outside of the deep south have ever heard of this gambling town. Granted, Tunica caters just to its region of the country, but why has no one heard of it. Even in Florida, no one has heard of it. I talk to gamblers on the boats all the time. Most have been to the Gulf Coast but none have even heard of Tunica, much less played there. Actually, that's not true. One guy did hear of it. "Oh, yeah, Tunica. That's the new boat that's opening next month in Miami Beach." Sheesh! It's like Atlantis or El Dorado. Tunica - the lost city of gambling.

    I don't have a clue...odd though isn't it?

Perhaps if they tossed Memphis in a few times it might help.

    Parker: Possibilities

I certainly don't have a definite answer, but I can think of a few possibilities.

First off, Tunica is relatively new, with the first casinos there opening barely 10 years ago.

When Atlantic City opened, it was the first place in the country outside of Nevada to allow casino gambling, so it made nationwide headlines. During the last ten years, casinos have been popping up everywhere.

The gulf casinos are within a couple hours or less drive from New Orleans, a major hub for many airlines, not to mention a major tourist destination in itself.

Tunica is close to . . . Memphis.

Now, being a big blues fan, I happen to like Memphis a lot. However, it certainly isn't New Orleans, and have you ever tried to book a cheap flight to Memphis from any distance away on short notice?

Finally, no matter where you are in the country (other than the south), there are closer casinos than Tunica. Easterners have AC, Westerners have Las Vegas and Reno (not to mention the CA casino scene), the midwest now offers numerous opportunites of its own, and Florida is closer to the Gulf.

Mr. Lucky: Good answers. A few to add.

Okay, I think I probably could have answered my own question. What do you think of when you think of the following gambling destinations:

Vegas: partying and gambling, shows and gambling, sex and gambling, high rollers and gambling, attractions and gambling, etc., etc.

Atlantic City: the boardwalk and gambling. Veegas' first and primary competition. It's been Vegas' only competition for so long it can't help but be well known even if it is not known as the best place.

    Reno/Tahoe: Skiing and gambling.

TheGulf coast: Beaches and gambling. Unlike Atlantic City, people really do go to the Redneck Riviera's casino towns to go to the beach. And it's the closest destinationto 2 of the country's four most populated states (Texas and Florida) not to mention Atlanta.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun: Size and location. I guess. I can't think of any better reason either.

Tunica: Gambling...... That's it folks. So it's half an hour from Memphis. It's really not associated with Memphis and might as well be 6 hours away. And so it's also the closest major destination for cities like Jackson, Little Rock, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Wichita, etc. Except for Memphis, none of these cities are nationally distinguished for much of anything.

And I guess the same could be said for Laughlin. It's almost as big and almost as unknown. Anyway, I guess we counters should be glad Tunica is such a secret. After all for us it is known for gambling and winning!

Some more answers. If I was in Tulsa, or Wichita, or any of the other cities that you mentioned, and someone suggested a 10+ hour drive to Mississippi, I would look at them like they were nuts.

So if I want to fly, well, first of all Tunica doesn't have an airport. So I have to be savvy enough to enter Memphis as my destination. Then I see the cheapest airfare is about $200 more than what I can fly to Las Vegas for.

If you go to YAHOO! Tavel and enter North America/United States/Mississippi and then tell it to list tourist destination cities -- Tunica isn't even listed.

Too far to drive from anywhere, can't directly fly there and it's expensive, doesn't do anything to promote itself -- One might ask, "Why does Tunica do as well as it does?"

Okie: The drive from Tulsa and OKC...

is only about 6 hrs. when there is not construction but it might as well be 10. Last time I went through there were atleast 11 construction sites and the I-40 bridge was out in Webber Falls. If you're coming from the west it is boring and slow.

Actually Laughlin is quite popular and well-known in southern California, which is its primary market.

The big attraction (besides gambling) is the Colorado River. Many southern Californians own boats, jet skis, etc., and enjoy going to "the river" for gambling and water sports.

However, the rapid growth of the California Indian casinos has had a negative impact on Laughlin.

You forgot Great Food, Easy Comps, and SD and decent pen. at most sites!

Very little for the wife and kids to do, so they rarely come along. Even better!

Yeah, key words, "IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA". Nationally, it's about as unknown as Tunica. For DD Laughlin is decent at lower levels, but Tunica blows it away at any level for single deck.
