    Assuming I play $50 at TC+3 and $100 at TC +5.
If I always tip the dealer, when I have a BJ, with $2 in the first case, and with $ 5 in the second case, does this cut to much in my winrate?

    Thanks in advance

A few variables here... Most importantly, how many decks are you playing against? +3 and +5 TC's occur far less frequently with 6 decks than with pitch games, so the tipping guidelines you stated will make less of a dent in your winrate.

There have been some heated threads on this board (and others) regarding tipping practices, and I don't want to start another firestorm here. Lots of losing players tip after a BJ, so you can get some bang for your buck (cover-wise) if the pit is watching (or if they're reminded).

IMO, you should forget about the $2 tips. More times than not, a "silver" tip from a mid-quarter player creates more resentment from the dealer than not tipping at all. You'll know it when you get the sarcastic, "Thanks for the tip".

shy guy: What is the guide line for tipping?

I have been playing at my local casinos - I did not tip enough, the casino dealers look at me like I am a piece of trash, scum of the earth. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Screw Dealers who want YOUR money. I once had a dealer in Laughlin pester me so much to tip that he actually said "I suppose you eat your entire birthday cake by yourself too." As if I was winning because he liked me and was giving me good cards.
If you are an advantage player you have a skill. You are doing all the work, not them.
Sorry if this begins a heated discussion. I do believe in tipping if you get something out of it though. See Mr. Pink, Reservoir Dogs.

So, in other words, the dealers try to make you feel guilty so that you will tip them. Just recognize this intimidation tactic for what it is and hopefully it won't bother you as much.

I make it a practice to never tip a service provider who tries to intimidate me. As a result, I usually tip waiters 10-30% of the bill (perfect service = 30% and I deduct an amount for every mistake that they make). I rarely tip blackjack dealers or taxi drivers.

Dog Hand: Getting something out of tipping

    Shaggy,

I was playing recently at a table with one other player, winning a bit and toking the dealer now and again. On the last hand of the shoe, I put out a max bet, and the dealer began dealing. She pitched the first card to first base, then to me, then without realizing it gave herself the cut card. She then pitched a second card to first base and me, THEN she realized that she had given herself the cut card rather than an actual card. As she called for the floor, I peeked at my cards and was thrilled to see a 20. When the PC appeared, he instructed her first to deal herself the next two cards... she did, and when she flipped her upcard, it was a face. As the PC turned to us to offer us the opportunity to throw in the hand, the dealer quickly checked her hole card, getting a red light on the peeper. First base and I immediately threw in our cards and took back our bets as the dealer revealed her snapper. I guess you could say that we got something for all of our previous tips! The PC left, and believe me, on the first hand after the shuffle the dealer had a couple of nice tokes!

I recommend tipping sparingly in the following situations:

    1) It will buy cover. I love the joke about the difference between a counter and a canoe. The canoe will tip occasionally.

    2) It will gain favor with the PCs. PCs like to see dealers tipped. It makes the dealers happy without costing the PC anything. This makes them like you.

    3) It will gain favor with the dealer. Deeper pen mainly if you can "buy" it, but ignoring obvious counter moves if they have a clue.

Obviously none of these are worth anything if you are playing anonymously. Since you are there all the time these are worth a lot. Done in front of the PC is best, but not required since if you are stingy or generous it will get around (as you have found).

I decide how much I will tip (if any) BEFORE I walk in based on how much I will bet and how long I will play. I put that money, in chips, in my front right pocket. I tip from that pocket only and tip it all. It also makes wonderful ratholing cover.

I tip a lot at my local casino. It kills me to have to give up some of my edge but in the long run it has bought me longevity. The pit gives me absolutely no heat while they sweat other counters. I have seen these counters empty the rack and not give one chip to the dealer (they wonder why the end up getting half shoed). I mainly tip for deeper pen and most of the dealers know this by now and respond. Tipping for deeper pen may actually be a tip for yourself. If you don't plan on playing at a certain casino much then don't even bother tipping. Just my 2 cents SM
