    novice nick: standing on 16

ok, i know you should stand on 16 vs. 10 when the count is positve, but it seems to me you should stand on 16 vs. 7, 8, and 9 as well, maybe "even more" so. I would think the dealer would be more likely to have a sub-17 total with these up-cards and draw to bust with a 10-rich deck even more. Is this thinking incorrect? Thanks.

    Yes it is.

Remember this: With 16 vs 10, not only will anything over a 5 bust you, but a small card, such as an Ace, deuce or 3, won't help you much either, since the dealer is likely to end up with a 20.

With a 7 upcard, drawing an Ace gives you the possibility of a push, and with a deuce or a three you are suddenly in pretty good shape.

In other words, with the sub-10 upcard, the dealer is more likely to have a hand you can beat if you can manage to make a hand. So you hit.

They do. You hit below the index, and in the case of something like 16 vs 7, the index will be quite high. In fact, I don't even use an index for 16 vs 7.
