    Bettie: Edwin Silberstang, author and gambling expert, dies

    Edwin Silberstang, author of popular gambling books and novels, died Tuesday at his home in Henderson, NV after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 82. Silberstang wrote more than 50 books, including such gamblers' bibles as "Playboy's Book of Games," "The Winner's Guide to Casino Gambling" and "Winning Casino Craps."

    His booklet, "Smart Casino Play" was the first book I read to learn basic strategy. I had no idea why basic strategy was the way it was, but I memorized the hitting, standing, doubling and splitting decisions therein (soft doubling was a real mystery to me). I remember going to Vegas and holding my own at a $5 table at "The Plaza". I had always wanted to play a good game of 21 and now I was doing it. I still have the booklet.
