• Phil Ivey loses edge-sorting court case

Ivey also lost the easiest route to appeal the decision. £7.7m lost. I am not familiar with UK law and therefore can't comment on the verdict.

It seems like Ivey got screwed by the verdict, plain and simple. Redcoats can't stand losing to an American hustler like Ivey.

He got greedy. The publicity killed his and many others plays. If he was satisfied with a civilized win he would have gotten paid and could still manufacture the opportunity elsewhere. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He is lucky he got his initial stake back. They were in no way obligated to do that. Now a dangerous precedent was set all because he was greedy and stupid.

I disagree about the size of his win. Playing for "only" a few hundred k might have not been worth his time relative to other opportunities. His bankroll is huge, so he's going to want to play for huge stakes most of the time. He also may not be able to get the concessions he wanted with smaller plays. And, we don't know how many other places he made this play and got paid. Certainly his accomplice had made several huge plays already by that time. In some ways this play had to be done for massive stakes for the play to work. If I make a few multimillion dollar scores and the play gets killed, I'm not going to feel too bad for anyone.

Sort of like that guy that found a glitch in videopoker so started banging out 3 or 4 jackpots an hour in a single location. Had he not gotten greedy, he would have still been doing it today. The "scorched earth" mentality doesn't work for the long haul. Greed costs and dries up opportunities.
